In a perfect world, these are the supplies that I would use to build my poker table ... Poker Cloth - Suited Speed Cloth Padding - Neoprene Vinyl - Whisper vinyl Wood - Anything but particle board I would not create a racetrack style table because: - I don't like the sound of chips being shuffled on wood. It 's too loud.
- I don't like the seam where the wood meets the cloth. Unless you get a perfectly even match, you might not be able to easily slide your chips to the center of the table.
I would not use drink holders because I find that they always get in the way. I prefer to make everyone use beer coolers under their drinks. Depending on the construction of the table, I might use slide-under or carrousel drink holders. These are just my personal opinions ... Good luck, nutn

I found Suited Poker Speed Cloth online on ebay, and it also came with 1/4" Volara foam padding. It was about $8.00 a foot, and i think shipping was $13.00. The cloth was 54" wide and the Volara came out to a little over 47" wide, but both were cut exactly how long I needed them to be. The guy (I think his name was pokersupplies or something like that) even called me to see if my order was exactly the way I needed it to be. Just do a sear in ebay for "speed cloth" and it should pop up in there.

What do you think about the slide-out cup holders? I have seen these used once and they seem like a really good idea, but they seem to limit the seating possiblities.
Just curious, BTW, this site is AWESOME!!! Taco

Does anyone know of a fabric that can be used outdoors? I want to build a poker top that can go on our patio table so we can smoke cigars while playing, but I don't want to have to worry about it getting ruined if a sudden rain comes. I don't need it to be the best poker cloth (I bought suited poker cloth for my inside table), I just need it to be durable.

I bought mine from Poker Supplies Ltd http://www.pokersuppliesltd.com/diamond_suited_casino_poker_speed_cloth.htm on sale for $7.99 per foot including the foam. I also got their spray adhesive (more expensive but they guaranteed it to not melt the foam) and 8 jumbo cup holders. With FedEx shipping it was $75... It came very nicely packaged and fast!!!Good luck, Jon

Jon, I would simply have a fitted poker table cloth made for the patio table - its very cheap, gives great results and easy. 1. Measure your patio table and then find some cloth that is at least 4-5 inches wider on each side. If your table was a 48" inch round, you would cut a 54-56" circle. Moleskin is cheap and works great. 2. Create a 1" pocket on the outside edge of the table cloth. 3. Feed either a draw string or elastic into the pocket. Put the fitted table cloth on the patio table, the elastic (or draw string) will pull the table cloth tight, eliminating wrinkles and prevent the cloth from moving. The bonus here is there is no chance for your table top (cloth) to be blown by the wind because it fitted and secured. The above is what I have done for my main poker table, which is a 52" x 72" oval kitchen table. Storage of the fitted table cloth is a breeze and it plays much better than those cheap poker table layouts. If you are outside and rain is starting, it takes about 4.2 seconds to remove the table cloth and run inside.

I really like the under rail cup holders, they work great. Actually, I think they increase your seating possibilities, since you can place them anywhere on the table, and move them around as needed.

Poker Cloth - Suited Speed Cloth Padding - Neoprene Vinyl - Whisper vinyl Wood - Anything but particle board Ironically enough, these were basically the same materials I used to build my table with and I am very pleased with how it turned out. I chose the materials based pretty much on your reviews. Thank you for the informative site and now this, a forum to go along with it to receive kudos like this one. By the way, you forgot the 1" high density (65 lb. compression) rail foam.

I'm working on getting the materials together for my first table. And I'm having some issues of which rail foam to get. Is the above mentioned foam highly reccommended?

If I made another table I would use the same foam again instead of taking a chance on something else. I was quite pleased with how my rail turned out with it. I am interested in what others might think, especially those that have used more than one type of foam. The only thing I would do different would be to make it 40" wide instead of 48".

I would use 1/4" volara for the surface and 1" medium to high density foam for the rail. Well atleast thats what worked best for me.

From what I've read you really can't tell the difference between the 1" 65lb foam and the 1" 60lb foam.

I just bought all my materials from http://www.yourautotrim.com and I was exremely impressed with their customer service. I live in Hawaii and the shipping quote their website quoted was $112, I paid it because there is nowhere around where to get the stuff, but they called me the next day and informed me that they could send it USPS and save me a considerable amount of cash. They ended up saving me $80. I would highly recommend them to anyone in need of table supplies.

Babujit, closed cell foam looks more like a sheet of styrofoam and less like a sponge. It also feels considerably different. It's almost like there are sheets of plastic around the spongy, sofa cushion interior like foam.

i don't know really how to describe the diff btwn open and closed cell foam. what i got for my table was a closed-cell carpet underpadding (that's what the sign said the local carpet installer's shop that i went into).
disclaimer: i am not a plastics chemist, chemical engineer or anything, so take what i say with a grain of salt
i figure closed cell foam should be firmer than an open cell foam (assuming the same density) since the closed cells would compress only so much since the air in the cells can't escape. i guess the other obvious characteristic of closed cell foam is that liquids will not be absorbed since they cannot penetrate the closed cells. open cells, as you can imagine, would let liquids pass right through from your playing surface to your wood.
if you happen to be browsing a store (instead of ordering online), just ask someone knowledgeable if the foam is 100% water proof. that pretty much defines a closed-cell foam.
4ceps p.s. that was a pretty technical discussion (coming from someone who doesn't know much); i'm just waitin' to be corrected...anyone?

I was at the fabric store today picking out the material for my dre.... I mean vinyl for my rail. The guy told me closed cell was pretty expensive and they didn't have any. So I think I am going to go with the underpad thing as well thx for the tip 4.

make sure it's not that crap underpad that looks like a bunch of foam all glued together (which is common). otherwise homedepot has ecofoam which some members of scottkeen's forum says works just as well. if you want the good stuff, that is, volara foam, try yourautotrim dot com (american) or canadapokersupplies dot ca (in b.c.) 4ceps

Neoprene is used for table padding and is similar to wetsuit material.
The PokerSuppliesCanada link is on my Table Supplies page.

I agree with Nutn about not liking the cupholders and racetrack. Over the past few years I built a bunch of tables for friends. Since everyone had a kitchen or dining room table and not enough room for an extra table, I decided to build a removable table that was casino grade, but could be put away when not in use. It's made of 3/4 inch stock and does not slide, shake or tilt when played on. 10 fit just fine. http://geocities.com/skzstoll/I have made several generations of tables. The latest have a padded playing surface and more plush surround. Material costs were less than $150.00 Later, Stoll

Do you use something rigid at the end of the rail piece? It looks like a crisp edge (which is perfect when you butt two pieces up together)... just wondering how you got that crisp look...
Also, how do you keep the hasps from marring/scrathing the dining room table underneath?

Stoll, the table you build is awesome and fits perfectly with what I need to build! I have been having some design problems with how to keep edges crisp and together. Found some table leaf hasps at Lee Valley that should work. Need a primer on how the rail is put together, but there's lots of help in the forums. How did you keep the edges square to line up, 1/4 stock and pad up to that. I'll email with more questions if you don't mind. NutN., outstanding site man! Kisby

1st post here and I just wanted to say I'm real excited to build my table in the next few weeks after reading the posts in this forum and seeing the different instructions on the site...I'll keep everyone posted and post my pics of my completed table when done....One question...Did anyone start off with a simple table and then finish it and decide to build another more elaborate one? It seems like it could be a pretty addicting hobby, especially if you like the way the first one turns out...

Welcome to the forums.
I know there are several people that have built multiple tables... Myself, I'd like to build another too... not so much to make another one more elaborate, but just because I know what to do now.. I want to try something different (wider rail, no racetrack)...
Definitely keep us up to date on the construiction and post pics when you're done. If you have any questions, ask!

I ordered suited speed cloth and a few decks of cards from POKER SUPPLIES LTD on Dec 11 2005 and as of FEB 8 2006. Still nothing. I have heard every excuse in the book but nothing from this guy. When I call he says he needs my request in writing! Which he has now got plenty of! $103 worth of nothing from this guy.
I ordered cloth elsewhere and itis great!

What adhesive is used to glue the foam to the wood? Is there a brand that works better then others? I like “InstaBond”. It stays tacky for a few minutes, but you can also use it right away. And it does not eat through the foam if you get a little too much on there. - Caution - Be sure to wear rubber gloves when using an adhesive with ANY variation of the words INSTANT or SUPER, in the name.

i used 3M's 777 spray adhesive. at first i didn't know how much to spray. the first try wasn't enough. then i spryayed over my first attempt ensuring that i went sloooooowly over the area. then you gotta make sure there's no air pockets when you lay down the foam. those were some of my mistakes. i hope i don't repeat them this summer when i start my sister's table 4ceps

Acutally, I'd argue against that... you're going to glue your gloves to the table... I'd just recommend being careful... and if you are spraying outside, spray upwind, not down...
