Hi everyone, im from the UK- where all the materials it seems cost twice as much as it does in the US, anyway, myself and 2 friends are putting a plan together to build our very first poker table, lots of ideas floating about, but one that im particularly interested in and im not even sure its possible is a brushed metal effect race track going round our table rather than the standard wood? Id appreciate some feedback on this as this site seems to be the no.1 in poker table making!

Cheers

I don't care for race tracks because the chip clatter is so loud.  I suppose you could use metal, but it would probably be even louder.

And welcome to the forum BTW

yeah, i might go for carbon fibre effect instead, less reflective as well! heard sheets of metal can be quite expensive and a pain in the arse lol!

Metal would probably not be a good idea. The pitched cards will slide much quicker when they slide on the metal compared to the felt. You might even be able to see the down cards (or the colors) reflected off the metal when a player lifts them. And noisy too!

Good luck, nutn

What you're looking for is a laminate sheet (like what you would use for a counter top) with a brushed metal finish.  They come in 4'x8' sheets and you glue it to the top of the plywood.  I believe they're a special order item at some HD/Lowes in the states, but I'm not sure where you'd find them across the pond.  Best of luck with your build.

I'm not a fan of racetracks either and I think I'd find a brushed metal one gimmicky. Apart from the other issues already mentioned there is the non-trivial issue of expense to get a sheet large enough for a full oval, assuming you want it one piece so there are no breaks in the track. You'd also I assume want to pony up for stainless so you don't get rust spots from condensation off of cold drinks. Interesting idea. Not my cup of tea though.

You might also find metal to be a rather cold surface: not comfortable for players hands, due to its thermal conductivity being much higher than wood or fabric. Even stainless steel is probably going to turn players off.

I apologize if I underestimate you, but you seem to be jumping from one bad idea to another. It's your first table, and from your notes that you are conspiring with friends on this, none among you is a master craftsman. Consider making your first table one of a basic design, perhaps with no racetrack at all. You might like it.

The first table I made was a racetrack.  If I had to do it again, I'd eliminate the race track.  My second table had no racetrack.

A racetrack might look good, but do you build the table to look at or play on? If I'd do a racetrack it would have foam and cloth just as the center of the table.

Many people seem to misunderstand the purpose of a gaming table.

The cloth is there to slow the cards down, the foam is there to keep the noise down and make it easier to pick chips and cards up, the rail is there to prevent cards sliding off the table. Everything else is cosmetic (save the dealers tray).

yeah weve abandoned these ideas, jumping in the deep end on our first attempt, were still going with the race track as we really want the stainless steel cup holders but going to just have a stained wood race track instead, will start to make this around 27th of this month, will post pictures of our progress!

I just finished my 4th table and all but one have wooden race tracks, 1 with stains and 2 with clear poly.
The games i play in the speed cloth would not last long without the track.

Have never thought about steel just because of the additional weight.

My only advise would be take your time with the cuts and read up on how to do the rail.

good luck

No matter what type of table you go with, be sure to get those pics up for the rest of us!! I like a nice speed cloth table with the cup holders right in the rail myself.

Every one in my league enjoys their beers and i know the beer would end up on the cloth before to long. With the track theres a nice flat surface thats not going to wrecked with cold beers on it.
