Hello Everyone.....I really like the modified Dr. Neau's formula posted by Williams back in 2010, but I am unsure of the "Prizemoney" variable. Is he referring to the total prize pool or the payouts to each player? If it is the latter, the formula doesn't generate any points for players that did not come in the money. I like this formula because it tends to reward players who show a higher profit and ROI during the season, whereas in the original formula players who show a loss and negative ROI, may end up with more points, as long as they play often enough and finish relativity well. Can anyone please help me tweak this formula, so it will work for all players, even those not finishing in the money. Thanks in advance for your help.

On Nov 2, 2010 Williams posted:
If you want to make sure there's a minimum amount of chips you could also use my variation on Dr. Neau's formula which fixes the minimum amount of points to SQRT(buyin) or SQRT(average amount spent) if you're having a rebuy tournament.

The spread is exactly the same though (which is determined by the (1 + Rank) element of the formula), it's just the amount that differs:

Points = Prizemoney / SQRT(Buyin+Rebuys+Addon) * (1 + 1 / Players) / (1 + Rank)

Yes, after testing out the formula, I see what you're saying. Is there any way to factor in the prize money won by a player in the formula? Am I correct in saying that the correct formula is as displayed below, and that the "Buy-in Amount" and the "Buy-in" variables are the same? Thank you again for your help.

Tournament Points = (SQRT((a * b) * (b / c)) / (d + 1.0))
     where
     a = Number of Players
     b = Buy-in Amount
     c = Total Expense (Buy-in + Re-buy)
     d = Player Finish

The formula does not take prize money into account, but it is structured to have the curve of what a decent payout structure *should* look like (if everyone got paid).

"Number of Players" = how many people participated in the tournament

"Buy-in Amount" = the standard buy-in amount for that tournament

"Total Expense" = the amount a player spent to play (their buy-in + add-on costs + rebuy costs...for that player only)

"Player Finish" = in which place that person finished

Really, you don't need to take the money won into account in this formula. The players in the money will get a significant larger number of points than the other players.

If you do want to factor in prizemoney, why not just give points to the players who finished in the money? Or, even better, just let the total of prizemoney won be the deciding factor for the ranking, and forget about having an additional points system.

The reason I have "Prizemoney" (which is the total prizemoney of that game, not the prizemoney won by a player) in the formula is to improve the relation of points vs. players, points vs. buy-in, and points vs. rebuys & add-ons. At the heart of it all it's still Dr. Neau's excellent formula though. I just altered it somewhat to fit my personal needs.
