In what situation do you have 2 big blinds in a tournament

- In a situation where the blind schedule of a (non-standard) tournament dictates it.

- In a tournament where the first blind level reads T100-T100, while the following levels read T100-T200, T200-T400... and so on. So, theoretically, in the first level, the small blind equals the big blind making it two big blinds, or two small blinds.

- In a tournament where the small blind is posted incorrectly, or where the player who is UTG incorrectly posted a big blind.

Can't think of another situation right now, at least not in Hold'em. Maybe there are other poker variants out there that apply that I don't know of.

if the tournament is run using a "moving button" rule, as opposed to a "dead button" rule, you may actually have 2 big blinds posted.

the first way it would happen is, if in the previous hand, the player in small blind position gets knocked out of the tournament, the next hand the button still moves, but an extra spot so whoever was the big blind is now the small blind and the button, leaving 2 players to post big blind. the hand after that, it would be small, small, big blind, then the hand after that blinds would be back to normal.

another scenario is if the big blind is knocked out of the tournament, then the following hand would just be 2 big blinds. and the hand after that, small small big, then back to normal.

with a dead button rule, the button would rest in an empty seat's spot for one or more hands until the blinds caught up to it. moving button makes the button move one spot every hand, with blinds catching up eventually.

for illustrations, check out HPT's explanations of the different rules

I think 72's response is what OP was looking for. What Poker Jack is describing I would not interpret as two big blinds but rather a SB and BB which happen to be the same amount.

Technically, that's not posting a big blind, but simply making up for a missed blind or paying for the right to enter before the big blind gets to you.  Still, it is the equivalent of a second (or even third or fourth) big blind.  Either way, the pot is there and the person can check if there were no raises.

Right, I didn't think about the possibility of a moving button. (Never played a tourney which used it.)

Late entries into a tournament post a big blind?  Really?  Not doubting, but....really??
