In your home game:

Have you ever had players pick up the muck cards to see what they folded because they forgot. I have, and   some have even shown other people.  (players not in the game)

This is a friendly game.  No major money at stack. Everyone has done it.  I don't want to be a jerk about it but I don't think they should be doing that.

Where do you place your muck cards?   I place them to my right just a few inches from the rail but in view of everyone.

How does one go about getting them  to stop?

Would in be alright to place them under the money pot?

The dealer should be pulling discards into the muck pile right after they are folded. It should not even be possible for a player to get to the pile since it is under the dealer's hand and the cards would not be identifiable anyway.

I know that home games typically do not have the dealer(s) following such stringent procedures though. If cards are left strewn around the table and someone picks up their old hand then a) that's going to happen if you leave them out and b) tell them not to do that. What if they inadvertently pick up someone else's hand? Big faux pas.

The burn cards belong under the pot, not the mucked cards.

Also the dealer should pull the cards into the muck so they get mixed. If a player is able to identify his cards to retrieve them they dealer has not done his job. (Of course if only one player have folded the situation is a bit different.)

You can still mix them so it's hard to tell if it was 2 of clubs 7 of hearts or 7 of hearts 2 of clubs
