My nephew just graduated from Stanford University and got a tryout with the 49ers. He has to make it to August 30th without a coach tapping him on the shoulder and saying "Go see Coach Harbaugh and bring your playbook with you.". If he makes it to August 30th ... he is a San Francisco 49er! Here is a screenshot of my nephew. He looks just like me except I am older and fatter and weaker. I am also stupider. So here we go ... four weeks of living on pins and needles waiting to see if he becomes an NFL player. He was also drafted by the Calgary Stampeders of the CFL so it's a question of does he get a job with the 49ers at $400,000 per year or the Stampeders at $60,000 per year. I live in Canada across the border from Detroit. San Fran plays at the Detroit Lions on October 16th. If my nephew makes the 49ers I will buy DetroitDad a ticket to the game and he can join me and my family rooting on the 49ers! nutn PS - You can see my nephew for a moment at the 57 second mark of this video from the 49ers locker room. He is being fitted for a 49ers helmet. http://www.49ers.com/media-gallery/videos/Players-Come-to-HQ/aafa4109-bb40-4927-bbf6-c7cfc960e9f6#?id=aafa4109-bb40-4927-bbf6-c7cfc960e9f6

Will they let him wear a barrel instead of pads? That's really cool! Best of luck to him!! I can't stand the 49ers, but I'll cheer for them if he makes the team. ~A5S

The head coach continuity should help, huh?

Yeah, Harbaugh and three other coaches came over from Stanford. They already know everything about my nephew so why would they invite him to camp if they didn't think he had a chance? Practices started today. Good luck, nutn

I watch a lot of college football and very little pro ball. I hope your nephew makes the cut and I hope that Harbaugh can make the transition from college coach to pro coach with the "ease" that his brother did. It's got to be nerve racking for your whole family. Good luck Nutn.

Hey Nutn, this year with the holdout and all, this is the best chance for an undrafted free agent to make a roster. The lockout wiped out all the "voluntary" spring workouts and some of the fall training camp, meaning a lot more positions are up for grabs as fewer veterans are "locked" into roster spots. What position does your nephew play?
The one downside? The 49ers are gonna suck this year.

They are looking at him for as a defensive end who can also play fullback on short yardage.
Good luck, nutn

My nephew was cut from the 49'ers on the last day. He now plays for the ... get ready ... Calgary Stampeders of the CFL (Canadian Football League). The CFL is like the NFL except they play 3 downs instead of 4 downs and the field is 10 yards longer and 20 yards wider. The average starting salary in the NFL is about $400,000 but the average starting salary in the CFL is about $65,000. They average about 15,000 fans per game. Most major U.S. college football teams would beat a CFL team. I could fly from Detroit to San Fran to watch his games at Stanford/Candlestick for about $300 - a flight to Calgary costs twice as much. Oh well. Rah, rah ... go Stampeders! Good luck, nutn

Stamps are a decent organization, with a great fan following. Nephew could do worse, Nutn . . . Go Stamps.
As for D-1 schools beating a CFL team, it would depend on which field/rules were in effect. Many years ago there actually exhibitions between the CFL and NFL (I think all-star teams but do not remember). One half of play with each other's rules. Invariably the League playing by their own rules would dominate, but when the game was played on a CFL field, the NFL half was much closer in score.
Long story short, they are different games with the same name . . .
