I've been one to frequently complain about how horribly boring soccer is.

The finish of the US v Brazil game was one of the most amazing and incredible things I've ever seen.  I'm actually still shaking as I'm typing this.

Incredible resilience by the US to overcome the HORRIBLE officiating.

Wow.. just wow..

I agree 100% - I may be the only other poster here - but I certainly agree!! It was awesome....the officiating was HORRIBLE - the call in the box was questionable at best and to be honest didn't look like a foul - and I don't think it deserved a red card....then top that off with the suspect call on the PK....I actually am a fairly big soccer fan ... my daughter and son both play, and we all watched the entire game together....my daughter was pretty fired up about the officiating (she is a defender and came unglued on the red card call Smiley )

It was pretty amazing game - to play as long as they did down a player...to battle the poor officiating (even the 2nd goal for Brazil came on an assist from what appeared to be an off-side player), and to continue to battle and show perseverance....the cross from Rapinoe to Wambach will go down as one of the best plays in US soccer history...and lets not forget Hope Solo - she is simply an AWESOME goalie....and finally, I think it is great that had the Brazilian players not "faked" those injuries the stoppage time wouldn't have been added in overtime....that's "justice".  Looking forward to watching the US women's team on Wednesday!

I just watched the highlights of the game. The skill of the Brazilian seconds before the incident with the first penalty and the red card was really good, but the red card was about the weakest excuse for a red card I've seen in several years. The decision to retake the following penalty looked ok according to the rules, though it was almost impossible to see that the American player entered the penalty box a fraction of a second too early unless watching it in slow motion. Very week play from the Brazilian goalkeeper on the 2nd US goal.

The Brazilian goalkeeper left the line a full second before the American player hit the ball on all US penalty kicks. She can move all she wants, but she can't leave the line. Consequently it was correct to retake that penalty - and any of the other US penalty kicks if more of them had been missed during that penalty shootout.

I noticed that too.  Every single one, she was WAY out front.  She was less than impressive for the whole game, from allowing the own goal, to the over aggressive miss on Wambach's header.

I got back from church and turned it on during the first extra period.  Brazil dominated ball control.  The US made a little happen during the second session, but it was still pretty even until POW!

Great set-up and fantastic finish for the tying goal.

Plesner, you and I both know that ALL Keepers cheat in this way.  It's part of the reason that more shooters are starting to emulate Ronaldo's stutter step approach to taking a PK.  Makes it harder for the Keeper to come off his line when the shooter lags the approach to the ball (also borderline cheating).

I didn't see or notice Hope Solo coming off the line on the PKs.

I would be shocked if there was no forward movement before the shot.

Just rewatched the kicks.  She came forward ever so slightly on the one where she was carded, but not even close to what the Brazilian Keeper was doing during the kicks at the end.  On those kicks, you are correct, Solo does not come forward, but she does start about six inches in front of the line.  I am not sure what the FIFA rules require of a Keeper, but Solo starts with her heels on the line, rather than her toes.  It's really clever, actually . . .

perfect video here of final penalty kicks.  Brazilian goalie takes one to two GIANT steps forward before leaping to either side to attempt the save.  Solo is on her line for every shot and maybe comes a little forward for one of them.  Where the hell are the officials calling the brazilian goalie on those?
Total bs on that first PK being retaken by the brazilians.  I hate watching soccer so mainly stick to highlights.

Well, I think they said that the first PK for the Brazilian team was due to encroachment by another player, not by Solo.  But it was still a completely bogus call.

I'm no soccer expert, but just reinforcing the point made.  This is from Shannon Boxx's PK.  You can clearly see that Brazilian keeper is moving and the ball hasn't yet been kicked.

As for why they are not enforcing it against the Brazilian Keeper, it might have something to do with the fact that the US scored every time.  Why give Brazil a second chance to save the PK?

Oh yeah, definitely not to be enforced on a make.  Kinda like the lane violation on free throws.  If the defense commits the violation, but the free throw is made, they don't have to shoot it over.

Awesome win for USA - even if they did seem to be outplayed for much of the game - Abby Wombach is a STUD of a player and is just simply awesome playing the ball in the air.

And is it just me or should Alex Morgan play more than Rodriguez.  I am sure the coach knows what she is doing and I guess that Morgan off the bench with fresh legs is a huge advantage for the US in matches.

Agreed TSF, Alex Morgan was really fast and skilled and she's really easy on the eyes if you know what I mean.

Hope Solo had a tough game and she was really hard on herself but she's a real pro and she'll bounce back.

The American women's team is amazing. They are in great shape. They didn't even look like they only had one day's rest. They make very little money but they lay it all on the line and dedicate themselves to being the best in the world.

I love World Cup Soccer

They are in great shape.

I think that's been a very strong point in their games.  Their conditioning seems to be incredible.  Bunch of damn Energizier Bunnies.

There is NO doubt about that - to beat Brazil with only 10 players was incredible.   Then to come back on few days rest and play again....WOW! My daughter plays soccer at a high level (U13) and has only had to play with 10 players two times ...once a player was red carded and removed abuot 20 minutes into the game - they played the rest with 10, and once when only 10 players showed up at a game....it is even more challenging playing down a player.  I firmly believe their conditioning ha sbeen a huge factor.
