Since the NBA finals are over and this was a discussion brought up recently (again) I was curious as to everyone's thoughts.....plus this is even brought up in a new comedy movie....so vote and discuss away.

voted for the obvious. He could command a court like no other and nail clutch shots at any time! By far the very best ever!

If it's not Jordan, it's Russell, Kareem, or Robertson, right? Not Magic or Bird (I'm not recognizing that James is even there ). But it's Jordan.

It's Bill Russell.
By the way, Dallas has declared tomorrow "LeBron James Day".

It's really hard to argue against Jordan.
Lebron shouldn't even be listed with the rest of these players. He just hasn't proved himself obviously.
Bill Russell was a great, great defensive player and obviously a brilliant man but he was questionable on offense and a horrible free throw shooter. We all know you need to make your free throws.
No Jabbar? Jabbar is really the greatest big man and he rarely gets the recognition he deserves over Bill Russell. I'm not sure why everyone argues for Bill Russell over Jabbar. Oh wait, it's his 11 championships. But you have to remember he had a lot of talent around him.
It's really easier to argue for the all time greatest rivals Bird and Johnson in favor of Jordan but both of them have admitted that Jordan is the greatest they've ever seen.
Of course there are always personal preferences but in the end Jordan just shines especially since he had very little talent helping him - aside from Scottie P.

OWG - I agree with your post - I only put Lebron there b/c of the current discussion.

"Best Player" arguments, to me, fall into the same category as "best color" or "best food". There's simply no way you're going to make someone change their mind about who they feel the best is. Same as politics and religion, I suppose; healthy to have open discussions.

I voted 'someone else' although I don't disagree with Jordan, the poll leader at the time of this post. I'm surprised Chamberlain wasn't included in the poll. Granted, while only two rings hurts him, he was a significant part of both teams that did win it all. For his career he averaged 45 MPG, 30 PTS and 22 REB. He was an absolute stud on the court (and the bedroom if you believe his outrageous claim). http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/chambwi01.html

This wa an huge advantage for him in both scoring and rebounding

Real answer, Jordan. Kobe is a lot closer to Jordan than LeBron will ever be.

What's a seven foot natural to do? And then there's that thing about the free throw percentage. It's almost funny to think that he has the third worst career free throw percentage in the history of the NBA - in history. He was almost never overmatched though. Apparently the only time he ever asked for assistance from his other teammates was when he was guarding Jabbar. I guess the sky hook was too much for him.

If he were a 20 year-old playing against little kids then his numbers could be dismissed. It's not like he got an easy pass to the basket.

It's not like he got an easy pass to the basket. 20 year old against little kids is a very good description of what it was probably close to being. Even on Bill Russell - who was the other dominant big man of that era gave up about 5 inches and probably 30-40 pounds....so your analogy is pretty close.

Non of these guys have it....it's Reuben Rothstein "the too tall jew". Played in the local JCC league, he can do a 360 tomahawk while eating a bowl of matzo ball soup and not get a drop on the hardwood. Refused to go pro because they wanted him to play on Yom Kippur. Props to the man with skills and stands by his beliefs.
