Would you have called this all in bet?

$35.00 Tournament at a casino
30 players only
Beginning of the tournament
4th hand dealt.
$25.00 $50.00 Blinds
You hold AJ Hearts suited in the big blind
Dealer raises to $300.
You call.
Flop  comes  Jc 8h 5h
That gives you top pair ace kicker and a flush draw.

You bet $300.

Dealer goes all-in.

What would you do?

Thanks

Will post what happen later.

hell yes, i'm getting my money in there with that hand.  If he has QQ, KK, or AA then so be it but I can't see how I wouldn't want to with so many outs! Did you make this call?

I think this is an auto call. I'm not a huge fan of getting it in so early on a draw, but against an overpair without a heart you're a slight favorite. The only time you're an underdog is if they have aces or overpair with a heart (in which case its only like 51/49). I'm calling this, although i'm not 100% on calling a 6x raise so early with AJ, even if it is suited.

If the guy shoved I think you can rule out him flopping a Set which would be worst case scenario for you. An overbet like that smells a lot like AK or an overpair which as holdemholmes points out puts you in coin flippish territory. Not sure how many chips you start out with but unless you're super deep stacked you're probably priced in based on how much is in the pot already.

Thanks for the quick answers.

1st we started with $2500 in chips.

I called.

She had pocket queens.

I lost all but $600.

Next hand went all in.   A J off suit.   Got my ace, but the guy got his flush.

End of tournament.

I will play in this tournament every chance I can.

Starting with 50bb I don't think i'm calling 6x pre, but if I did, I'd definitely call the all in. Not much you can do...youre a favorite in this spot so nothing wrong with the move.

I know that poker players like to say stuff like, "the stakes dont matter, just play the situation", but the stake and tournament are definitely part of the situation.  If this was a big time tournament with several hundred players, I'd probably lay this down.

Having said that, I think I'm looking for the 'call faster' button as soon as I can here.  It's a cheap tournament, it sounds like the structure sucks, and you've got a big hand.  This guy has an overpair almost 100% of the time here, but you just need to hope it's not aces and put your money in.

ditto on what holdem said about the preflop call with A,J.  I may opt to wait, let the 50 go from the BB.  Like you said though, you called and flopped a large draw with one over.  Also as Stooks said, it's not a huge buy in and I'd take my chances to double up quick in that situation.

This is a typical example of a situation where I find it very hard to play "right".

I think that most of the times I call in a situation like this I get sucked out...

So sure, you're probably ahead, probably have the best hand at the moment and a great flush draw. But if I would call the villain would sit with his 6h 7h and either hit a straight, and if I hit the flush he will damned sure hit the straight flush...

Knowing that you did the right thing isn't much of a comfort when you bust a tourney in the fifth hand...

I ran the numbers and he's very coin-flippish against the actual hand and slightly ahead or behind depending on if villain has Qh. It's not so much that he is "ahead" but that he is priced in. If you start with T2500 and put in 1/4 of it pre and post-flop then you can't fold that hand so someone who shoves when you have them covered by T600 (presumably villain was down to T1900 before the hand) and it's only T1300 back to you.

That said, I also agree with others who questioned a 6x raise pre-flop with AJ out of position.

Horrible pre flop call imo with these starting stacks/blinds

6x's bet pre flop says either A/K or Giant Pair (K's or A's).

The flop was great for you, but honestly,  most flops aren't going to be. What if you flop an Ace? A/Q and A/K still crush you.

In this situation its an instant call.

In my experience in these cheap/shallow live tournaments, the 6x pre is going to be TT-QQ a lot more than AA and KK, just because players at that level are "happy to take the pot down right now".  After the flop, it doesn't really matter anymore because the money is going in.

I agree with DD, though...the call preflop is pretty bad.  With 50 BB stacks you are better off taking a flop with 9Ts (even though I'm folding that hand also) than an AJ type of hand where you are usually destroyed.

Fold pre and get in on the flop.  Also, would anyone else check-shove the flop instead of donking into the button?  I was thinking that might get more value from AK type hands or small pairs that will fold to a lead, but might bet the flop or call one bet on the turn or something.
