Sucky situation. That said, it clearly states in the rules what happens in the situation. If you don't want to be subject to that possibility then don't enter the tourney. Should FTP have scheduled a major event right next to a maintenance? Would have been nice if the they didn't. Should the rule be that by default the tourney will continue after the maintenance is completed unless a chop is agreed to? Maybe, but that wasn't the rule at the time. I think the biggest mistake here was not warning the players earlier. If they had an hour of notice then there would have been more time to negotiate a chop.

it is a sucky situation...rules are rules i guess...but i would be pissed too if i had a chip lead and felt i had an edge at the table with a chance to win about twice the amount i was forced to take a deal on.  shame on FTP for scheduling a server shut-down while theres a $1000 buy-in MTT goin on.  i just feel sorry for the guys this happened to and hope this never happens to me.

I didn't find exact numbers after a quick scan but I don't think anyone was shorted twice an amount. If they did a chip chop then the payout distribution would be reasonably close to expected take.

And don't get me wrong, I'd be pretty steamed if that was the resolution of a tourney that I was in but after the heat of the moment I would look at the situation and realize that, while it sucks, I can't really complain about FTP doing anything  terribly "wrong" like an incorrect ruling. It was just terrible circumstances.

I do agree with some others in the thread that though the default should be to resume play after the downtime (if it's only going to be an hour like it was) unless a chop is agreed to.

What would happen if one of the 3 players was so short stacked that their share of the mandatory chip chop was less than 3rd place? Or indeed, what if one player had such a lead that their take was more than 1st place?

That wouldn't happen. Everyone gets third place money as a base then the rest of the prize pool is distributed based on chip count.

My gripe about this is that the rule states "31.Occasionally, due to technical difficulties, a tournament may be cancelled..." The blog clearly states that it was routine maintenence, not tech difficulties. The rule should probably be clarified, but I guess there's nothing that can be done about that tourney now.
