Bloody Marvellous

« on: Apr 08, 2011 at 03:24 »

I decided to sell my 95 Toyota pickup and buy a more sensible car.

Though the truck is pretty much bulletproof, a lot of anciliary stuff started to go wrong. I've spent over $3000 in repairs over the last 3 months, and more repairs were imminent. Not to mention the fuel consumption (it's not exactly aerodynamic) and the high road taxes.

So I went from a '95 Toyota Hilux 2.4l diesel pickup truck to a '11 Fiat Punto 1.3l TDI hatchback.

And here's a small illustration in numbers:

Toyota HiluxFiat Punto
PriceSold for $5,750Bought for $22,900
Fuel consumption20 mpg65 mpg
Fuel cost over 12,500 mi/yr$4,400$1,350
Road tax$1,880 / year$0.00 / year

So not including maintenance, I'm already saving over $4,900 a year.

Of course I do pay more on insurance since it's a new car, and I do have to pay monthly installments now, but I think I made the right choice here.

And here's a promotional pic of the new car:

Well, on average. It'll do 75 MPG on the freeway.

How did you find a sucker to pay $5750 for a 15 year old truck?

William:

Great idea; unfortunately, they are not available in the USA to the best of my knowledge.

We settled for a 2011 VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI. It gets 38 mpg in town and 42 on the freeway.

Don't forget the tax deduction next year and the fact you do oil changes only every 10,000 miles !

Life is good.

Get the Toyota Priapism electric car.  If your charge lasts less than four hours, please consult your mechanic.

Nice wheels.  Looks like what they will be calling the Fiat 500 over here in Canada when they start up production next year.  Owning a car in NL is a bit expensive, no?

The Fiat 500 (Cinquecento) is a different model. It's a bit smaller, and more cutesy. They are very, very nice cars though.

I especially like the Black Jack edition:

Owning a car is expensive anywhere. Being exempt from road taxes, and low fuel consumption helps though.

Watched Dennis Miller on HBO this morning while running.  Made me think of this thread.  He said he was helping the move toward alternative energy by using as much gas as possible.

I've been keeping track of the fuel consumption, and apparently I'm not a very fuel efficient driver...

I managed to average 50 mpg over the past 4 months. With a current best and worst of 56 and 44.5 mpg between fuel stops.

If you're getting 85%+ of the rated fuel economy for the vehicle, I would not fret overmuch.   Those ratings are acquired through a combination of several factors totally unrelated to real world driving conditions.  The cars will have minimal fuel load, some tiny driver in the seat, no cargo, perfectly tuned engine for the conditions, etc.   Closest I have ever gotten over a full tank of fuel was 93% of rated economy, and that was the highway rating.  I currently get ~85-90% of the rated City mileage for my vehicle, but I drive like an old man:   No rapid starts, smooth accelerating and coasting in advance of congestion or stoppages.  I rarely take the tach above 3k, and most of the time keep it around 2-2.5k during acceleration.  Also, use the cruise control as much as possible.   The computer is more efficient than your foot every time.
