Hey guys...I'm new here and pretty new to poker in general and I'm just looking for some advice.  Me and about 5-6 of my friends have a weekly no limit game going on.  The max buy in is $10 - we're young and none of us are rich and you can always buy back in.  Lately the betting has been extra agressive very early on and the games have been ending very quickly and people have been getting frustrated.  We were thinking of trying limit or pot limit style game.  We still want to stick with $10 as our max buy in....any advice on what the blinds and max bets should be and what format we should use?  Thanks!  ~Nicole

Sounds like a cash game?  What are the blinds?

What structure are you using?

Sounds like a group getting to together having fun and playing some poker.

You don't really want to hurt anyone financially.

Drop your buy in to $5.00 and play two games.  More people will win money that way.

As DD suggested, try a cash game instead. If your tourneys are that aggressive and end that quickly then I think your buy in is probably too low despite what everyone thinks they can or can't afford. Your structure could be a culprit too so you should post your starting stacks, blinds, and payouts to see if those could be part of the problem.

My guess is that the structure is too aggressive.  Doubling blinds every 20 minutes?  15 minutes?

Your starting stack should be 100x the initial BB.  So if your first blind is 5/10, then you should have 1000 in chips in front of you.

Next, you need to progress the blinds more slowly (not in terms of time (necessarily), but in terms of how fast they escalate from one level to the next).

Post your structure and we'll see if we can tweak it.

Hey guys thanks for the replies.  Yes so far it is a no limit cash game but we added a new player recently who has more money then the rest of us and an extremely aggressive style.  And you're right we are just friends looking for a good time not to bankrupt each other.  We usually start the blinds at .10 and .20 and raise every 20-30 minutes and usually only raise up to .30/.60 and for bigger games with 8 players we'll raise all the way up to .50/$1.  Thanks again guys any advice you have is greatly appreciated.  ~Nicole

If it's a cash game I wouldn't raise the blinds at all then.  Just keep them .10/.20 the whole time.  That will keep the game affordable for the whole night.  You don't need to raise the blinds in a cash game, only in tournaments.

Don't raise the blinds in a cash game.  And if one player is ruining the fun for the group, try a limit game.  Keep the blinds at .10/.20 and make it a max of three raises per round.  Bets on the turn and river can be doubled

Or rather, if someone is being overly aggressive then learn how to play against that type of player.

You could play Spread Limit too. Blinds of .10/.20, and make the spread .20-$1.00, meaning a player can bet anything between .20 and $1 on each street.

I missed this thread last month, but I have to ask:  why are you raising the blinds in a cash game?
