Heat and humidity, or blizzards and shovels? I guess it's just whatever you're comfy with. Good luck with your boot camp, sir.

I just called my recruiter (it's mandatory to call once a week on mondays to check in) and he had some GREAT NEWS!!!
I GOT THE JOB!!!! So that means I'll be officially leaving on July 5, 2011 en route to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, TX. He sent in the necessary paperwork so they can write up my contract. As soon as he gets it back, I'll go in to sign it and make it official.
Since I've been out of work for 2 months, it feels good to know exactly when I'll be leaving instead of waiting 6+ months to book a job and completely drain my bank account paying off my car loan without having a job.
I can't wait to be a part of the greatest Air Force in the world.

LOL I'm just excited because I've never been anywhere else except for Florida, Vegas, and a few neighboring states to NY. I'm looking forward to coming to Texas to meet new people and eat some authentic BBQ.

My contract has been written up and I'll be signing it at my next DEP meeting on Wednesday. I don't know how chained down you are during all that military stuff, but if you find yourself up in Austin, drop a note. ~A5S

Well, it depends - central SA to central Austin is probably an hour and a half. Lackland is on the south side of SA, so probably 1:45-2:00

Especially during basic training and during tech training trainees are keep on a short leash (at least we were at Keesler.) Even on the weekends new guys could not leave base for the first couple weeks. Then after that new guys could only leave base in your AF blues and had a early curfew. By like week 4 more freedom is earned but I believe air trans school is pretty short. It could be different now or at his tech school.

What BigBlind said.
Its been two plus decades for me. I'm sure some sh%t has changed since 87.
He will have zero time in Basic Training. I was also down there for Law Enforcement Tech School. I had SUN's mostly available, but we weren't leaving base.
I was also down there for K-9 School. Most weekends opened up at that point. I was able to hit downtown SA (which I recommend if you have time).
I went back a year later for Drug/Bomb dog school. At this point, we had every weekend, and most evenings during the week. Partied a little to much, lol.
Good Luck Sir.......................

Ah I would highly suggest not bring them with you to basic. And maybe not even with you to your tech school. First off at basic all your personal things are locked up and you have zero leisure time. Then at tech school gambling in the dorms is frowned on. While at tech school you still have a straight and narrow line to walk. Now if you want to bring the table topper and such with you to your first duty assignment then ok go for it.
Anyways nice coin

Yea i know not to bring stuff like that to basic or tech school. But I'll have a chance to come home after tech school to grab some personal belongings before going to my assigned base right?

Yes you can normally take leave or do recruiter assistance. Recruit assistance does not count as leave however you will get to go back to your home station and work with your recruiter for like 2 wks. Normal your recruit will have you work a couple hours then give you the rest of the day off.

My mom threw me a 'going away' party of sorts last night. Everyone had a good time and i ended up hugging the toilet before getting to bed.
8 days before I'm on a plane to TX.

Good Luck K9, remember, no matter how loud or how much they yell at you, it's nothing personal. keep you head down, mouth closed and follow all instructions to the letter. You will have people from all different walks of life suddenly become your buddies. In the beginning some of these personalities will get everyone in trouble. The key is don't get mad at them, everyone else come together to help them overcome their issues. When that happens you will excel as a team and that is what the training staff will be looking for.
Take care, and take some moleskin with you. Your feet will thank you.
Sharky

It's kinda like my mom's been preparing me the last 15 years for all the in-your-face yelling. I think she would make a great MTI.
I'm a little nervous about what i'm getting myself into, but excited to start a new life on my own.

Your Mom would be a a lousy MTI, as she loves you. Remember what Sharky said . . . all the yelling is just business, nothing personal whatsoever. They need to get rid of the civilian in you, and teach you how to be a soldier (even if it is just the Air Force . . . lol). Congratulations on your enlistment, and remember to keep in touch when you can.

Even if you love Bowling, DO NOT tell your TI that if he/she asks in the first couple days.....
The poor SOB sitting next to me that first night did not get the same advice. He proudly bragged about his 220 average and spent the next 6 weeks cleaning toilets LOL
In fact don't answer any questions or say anything unless spoken directly to you. Your goal should be to blend in so well that your TI stops you at graduation and asks "who the hell are you?"

LOL my recruiter warned me about this. The TI might ask, "Who always wears clean clothes?" or "Who washes the dishes at home?" which means if you raise your hand, you might be doing laundry or washing dishes while at bmt. But he actually encouraged me to volunteer for kitchen or laundry duty b/c he said he usually bs'ed with the other recruits while washing dishes and was like a little break for an hour or two.

When I went through KP was something that each flight would do for like a week at a time so it wasn't your everyday detail like latrine queen or house mouse. When it comes up it is defiantly worth volunteering for, it is a long day and you'll work but the reward is that you get to eat and you get time to enjoy your food rather than the mad rush that will be chow time most of your days. I was on the laundry crew and it was a hidden secret. The TI's stayed out of the laundry room for the most part so when you were doing laundry you could talk freely and relax. If you can get laundry you're doing good. Good luck!
