Hey guys, haven't been around for a few weeks. I've been busy studying for the ASVAB test for the United States Air Force which is this MONDAY!!! I'm nervous and excited as this test can change my life. I'm still kinda young, but i decided it was time to do something meaningful with my life. And since i have some college credits, I'll be on the E-2 or E-3 pay scale when i get to basic training.
I'll be sure to keep you guys updated with my progress.

Good luck! I'm almost 20 years in, prolly one of my best decisions. I am the Base training manager at my base and send folks to BMT and their technical schools every day. If you have any questions and want the real answers (recruiters by law are not allowed to tell the truth LOL) let me know...

I did 5 years, from 87-92. Things have probably changed since then. Just make sure you have your career choice locked in before signing on the dotted line.
As a single guy it was great. Once I started my family, the AF wasn't for me. Wasn't into leaving my family for a year at a time.
Good Luck Sir...................
and as stated, thanks for serving our Country. To this day, when I see a hoisted Flag, or hear the Anthem, I get chills and goose bumps.

Hope your ASVAB went well, and as DD said "...Just make sure you have your career choice locked in before signing on the dotted line. " I did not, and went in open electronics. My first job was the pits.
If you scored well enough on your ASVAB give Precision Measurement Equipment Laboratory (PMEL) technician some thought for a job. Between active duty, and 16+ years since retirement I have been in PMEL for 32 years. Great job. Indoors, most of the time, 73 +/- 6 degrees year around.
What ever you do good luck, and thanks.

Hopefully some sort of mechanic position since i already have experience. But i'll be meeting with a career counselor so who knows, maybe theres another job out there that i'll enjoy. Plus since i got such a high score, i'll be qualified for a lot of jobs.

I agree with TB here. PMEL is a great job with a controlled environment. The guys on the flight line must work outside in the heat of summer and when it freezing cold out. Also unlike other jobs in the AF we (PMEL) are rarely away from loved ones. Been in 13 yrs so far. The best advice I can give you is get a guarantee job that you want. Don't feel like you have to settle for anything.

Opportunity to move is always there however being deployed to a 3rd world country for 6 months or more is not always appealing single or not. Being in the AF you will travel for sure however some jobs deploy more then others. I am from NY and my time in I have been stationed at Texas, Mississippi, Italy, Turkey, Korea, Washington, and Florida. I have traveled most of Europe been temporary stationed to Mississippi, Portland, Ohio, Utah, Florida, and a desert location.

I'll be leaving in a little while to meet my recruiter at his office and hop on the shuttle bus to the MEPS (Military Entrance Processing Station). Tonight we'll be staying at a hotel/motel for the night since testing begins at 0445 tomorrow morning.
Hopefully I'll have some good news when i return Friday.

I don't leave for basic training until May. My recruiter called me like 2 weeks ago saying there was a job opening in the Electronics field and asked if i wanted the job. I then asked when i would leave if i took the job and he said, "Tomorrow." If he said i'd leave in a week then i would have accepted but the notice was so short that i just wasn't prepared. I just want to pick my MOS (military occupational specialty) and get a concrete date for when i leave for BMT. I quit my job the first week of march so i have some time to myself before the big step of leaving for Texas. Been going to the gym 4x a week and running a few miles a day. The more i'm prepared physically, the easier BMT will be.

The short notice is just part of the deal for USAF recruiting these days. My son enlisted two years ago and spent about 6 months in delayed entry status waiting for a ship date. Along the way, he got called two or three times about a slot that had to be filled immediately. He even told his recruiter yes to one of them, but the slot disappeared by the time the rectuiter replied up her chain of command. It's an odd way to do business, but the AF isn't hurting for recruits these days.
I hope you realize that when they promise you a field, that's really, and I mean really, open. My son had several AFSCs on his wish list, all in the computer/electronis field; He ended up in avionics, which is in the same field, but not one of his wishes. He didn't know for sure what his AFSC would be until about 10 days before graduation from BMT.
He's cool with it, and he's happy enough since he's currently in Hawaii for his first duty assignment. But he's already said that if he decides to stay in the AF after this enlistment, it'll be to cross-train to a different field.
This isn't meant to be a slam on the AF at all. It's just the way they approach recruiting. New recrtuis fill the jobs the AF needs filled now. Once an Airman is a proven performer, they can cross-train to a job they really want.
Congratulations and best wishes from a 22-year Army guy serving in his last deployment.

I just got off the phone with my recruiter who had some good and bad news.
The bad news was, one of his recruits got into a car accident so she won't be able to leave for another few months.
The good news was, her job opening (Air Transportation) has to be filled and was offered to me. This is one of the jobs i applied for so I'm 99% sure i will take it. If i do, I'll be leaving for boot camp on July 5.
This is a description of the job:
"You will inspect cargo and mail offered for airlift to verify eligibility and proper documentation, packaging and marking according to applicable directives. You will determine quantity and type of cargo to be loaded according to allowable aircraft cabin load. An air transportation apprentice selects and palletizes loads using automated or manual methods and coordinates with air transportation clearance authority on diversion of cargo. You will load and unload aircraft using materials handling and loading equipment; check cargo against manifests; and annotate overage, shortage or damage. You will complete documentation and reports required within the air transportation system to include air land and air delivery. You will prepare and maintain necessary forms for passenger travel and prepare weight and balance records. You will requisition, store and issue expendable and nonexpendable items for use on aircraft. You will review travel authorizations for validity and accuracy and check in passengers and baggage."
