Hi,

I will be organizing a tournament at my workplace. We`ll be about 10 people. I want it to make it as nicest experience as possible so that people would want to do it again Wink. We will be playing in the conference room on a big wooden oval table. I was thinking of buying a green poker cloth to put on the table to protect the cards, chips, and also bringing the casino mood.

Do you think this is a good idea? Will the cloth stay put on the table it it`s not fixed with anything or will it make waves? What can i use to fix it on the table (temporarily)? Did any of you have such experiences?

Thanks.

Any reasonable cloth is going to be way better than a bare table top surface. It will be very difficult to pick cards up off of the table unless you put something on it. Playability would be its most important function though, not protecting cards or chips. It most likely is protecting the table more than anything else. When you say "poker cloth" if you are referring to some actual speed cloth or the like then that would be best case scenario. If you're talking about going to the fabric store and getting something then you should check out this page http://www.homepokertourney.com/tables_supplies.htm for cloth recommendations. For best results I would spring for auto headliner material underneath the cloth so the surface has some give and makes it easier to pick up cards and chips.

I was specifically talking about this one.

I don`t like the waves that appear due to the folding of the cloth. I think they (the waves) will interfere with gameplay, unless the cloth is stretched and fixed somehow to the table.

How do you recommend to get rid of those waves?

P.S. The description of the article says that the Cloth is thick, is 180x90 cm, is rectangular in shape, weight 0.3 kg.

Try using an non-slip or rubber mat underneath the cloth. You can wipe out the creases, and the cloth doesn't move about.

I don't know what material that is made from but I would just go to the fabric store and get something there instead. From the looks of the picture that appears to be felt which is not going to work as well as many other options. You don't need the cloth to be thick, you just need it to lie flat and have cards slide across it.

I don't know what size your table is, but I bought a 5x10 billiard cloth from our local billiard supply store which works very well. It lays flat without any extra effort and it's thick enough to keep sliding around an issue. As previously suggested, a cheap piece of fabric underneath could be an improvement. DO NOT buy felt if you want your investment to last a good while. The billiard cloth is wool.

I've been using fleece blankets and a bedsheet on top of that.

The fleece blanket can be used alone, but the ones we had didn't have nice colours so we used the bedsheets for the looks.

As for stretching, I've used duct tape, safety pins and some elastic cord or just strings under the table.

I'd say the fleece blanket is the most important part, you need some kind of soft surface to be able to pick the cards up. Just a think cloth will not make picking the cards up easier (I have tried).

As for helping cards slide, cards slide easier on a table without cloth. Cloths were initially placed on the tables to slow down cards.

Headliner material works great.  You get a decent surface to play on and it's padded (and cheap)

It's the kind of material you'd find across the inside roof of your car.
