We have recently added Pineapple in our FRI. night cash game. We had a mishap this previous FRI. night.

How we play (in case it varies).

We deal out 3 cards. Then a round of betting. Then we deal the flop. Then a round of betting. Then we discard one card. Deal the Turn, Bet, Deal the River, Bet.

In this instance, the hand plays like it should. After the flop betting there is only two players left. Player A bet, folds to player B, who raises. Folds back to player A who just calls.

Check, Bet, Call on the Turn. On the River Play pushes, Player B calls. At that point Player B realizes he never discarded.

Player A had K/Q (unknown discard)

Player B had A/A/9 (obvious discard of the 9)

flop is 2, 3, q
Turn is a 4
River is a 5

Once Player B announced that he never discarded (he is also the host), a discussion started on how to handle this situation (pot was about $100.00's). I said Player B's cards were dead and player A should be rewarded the pot.

In this situation, it was clear what Player B would have discarded, and that he would have been ahead the entire time. I said that didn't matter. His hand is dead.

The table agreed. Even Player B (the Host) agreed.

Everyone here is good friends. Player A offered to chop the pot. It was agreed. That is what they did.

I then suggested that a house rule needs to be put in place. We decided that Once the Turn is flipped up, if you haven't discarded your 3rd card, your hand is dead, no matter the action.

Thoughts?

Not a big pineapple player, but that seems like the most logical thing to do.

But it also seems that the dealer should be paying attention and making sure that the discard happens before the turn is exposed.

Our rule is that you have to discard before you act on the flop.  If you check and then discard your hand is dead.  People accidentally forget all the time and their hand is then accidentally dead every time.

Everyone acts on the flop, then discard at this game.

But it also seems that the dealer should be paying attention and making sure that the discard happens before the turn is exposed.

In a perfect world yes. None of us are professionals, and we sometimes forget to direct the game like we are.

There are two variants, discarding pre-flop is Pineapple. Discarding post-flop is Crazy Pineapple.

I'd absolutely rule the hand dead too since he had the improper amount of cards in his hand. IMO there is no need for a house rule any more than you'd need one for holding five cards in Omaha but I guess it doesn't hurt to spell it out.

I would rule this as the same as if a player has the wrong number of hole cards.

A better thing to discuss is how to make sure all players discarded a card. What if a player keeps all three and never tells? I think there needs to be a procedure... Tucking the cards under the edge of the pot? Tucking the cards under each players bet, so a bet is not valid unless there's a card under it? (The then dealer mucks the discarded cards when collecting the bets.) Won't work well if everybody checks of course... but I think just putting the discarded card on the table would work as a check?

Before the next street is dealt, the dealer should announce "down or dead".  Just to be certain that everyone knows they should have discarded.

Just getting bored with the same game is the main reason for branching out.

I have played in a couple pineapple games where we consistently found a couple cards under the table at the end of the night.  That fact together with the slowness of waiting for someone to discard makes it not my favorite game.

Here's a fun Pineapple hand I saw in our cash game:

.25/.25 PL Pineapple.

Preflop raise to .75, 3 callers flop. (everyone discarded correctly)

Flop: 3s-4s-8s   SB: bets $2.00  BB: call CO: call.  Turn: 6s

SB: check,  BB: check CO: bets $4:00,  SB: raises to $12,  BB folds CO: calls

River: 8c   SB bets $10 CO: all-in for $45.  instant call by SB.

CO: shows Pocket 4s for Full house.

SB: shows 2s-5s for 6 high straight flush.

SB: says he started with 2-5-K all spades but kept 2-5 for the straight odds.

CO: goes into a rant about catching a 2-outer for the straight flush.

I tell him SB was ahead the whole way. Flopped the flush, when he flopped the set. Turned the straight flush and you were unlucky enough to catch the boat on the end.
