Game last night, down to 3 handed. I check raise all in on the turn for 8,600 more than his 3,000 bet. He says call, then asks me how much it is. For some reason he thought my all in was around 3,000 more, not 8,600 more. He says he didnt know it was that much and wants to fold now that he knows the actual price. My question is does this fall under the category of gross misunderstanding of the bet or not?

I would rule not. It is the player's responsibility to check the stack of the opponent before making the call. He may ask for a count is he's unable to determine that for himself.

His call is binding. Only if the high denomination chips weren't clearly visible would I rule the call not binding.

I agree with William.

You plainly stated all in.  Assuming all of your chips were easily visible, it is up to your opponent to ask for a count before saying he calls.

Assuming that all of your high denomination chips were clearly visible (pretty safe assumption I'd say), then he doesn't really have much reason to back out of the call. Based on the information available it seems a pretty cut and dried case of verbal being binding.

This is exactly what I said, but for some reason this guy for most of the game was just kind of looking down or looking away from the table, not really paying attention to anything like how many chips someone had. Not making an excuse for him but I didn't want to argue to the point of getting another player mad. He is a newer player and it's the first time i've played with him. He was given a warning and told that if he did that again he would be forced to call no matter what the bet was if he said call.

Well, the upside is that there is no way he can suck out on you if he folds.  Smiley

Lol....I know you never want anyone to fold when they're getting it in bad, but with the way he was hitting....
