My answer to this question is a no!!  I have a game set for tomorrow night and we are currently getting about 5 inches of snow here in Western Virginia.  Several of the players are asking if I am going to cancel!!  NO WAY!!!!  How much snow would it take to cancel YOUR poker game???

The answer clearly depends on how much snow an area normally gets. The answer is going to be different in Minnesota and Arizona.

In general, I will cancel a game if conditions exist (snow, storm, natural disaster) which adversely affects the ability of players to get to the venue. Or I will cancel a game out of respect for items like a significant global event like 9/11 or group specific events like a death of a player.

The only time I have ever had to cancel a game was when I was unable to host it.  Generally the show must go on.  I could see canceling due to the extreme circumstances that Martini mentioned. To answer the question...no I have never canceled a game due to snow.

Here in Austin, if someone even mentions the word snow, the city shuts down..   Pathetic, really..

I've had to cancel a few times in the past due to poor weather and road conditions.  Most of my players drive a minimum of half hour to an hour, one guy almost an hour and a half one way, and if poor conditions exist, I'm not going to pressure them into making a risky trip just for a couple of hours of game time.  Its more a player safety first thing.

Yeah, for our weekly mid-week game I have no issue with shutting it down for poor travel conditions. If snow is an issue in your area then I would use school closures as a benchmark for when there is too much snow.

Since our tourneys are not held every week it will take more consideration as to when to cancel them since they are more special events.

If you are running a league I would make sure to have very specific and objective conditions for when a tournament gets canceled or postponed. It wouldn't hurt to have a provisional date toward the end of the year where a postponed tourney can move to. When you have league points involved you should really be careful about how you handle shutting down a tourney date.

My procedure would be to take a vote at the beginning of the season and see what people want to do. Just decide on how bad the conditions should be before you cancel the game.

That's the case here in Georgia as well.  Cry

In answer to the question, I'd think that if it's one of these tourneys where points are kept, canceling is only fair if people can't make it due to weather.  If it's just a regular, standalone cash game/tourney, then why cancel?  There will be another game another time.

Personally I think you're better off than just a phrase like "bad conditions." Let's say the host of the last tourney of the season happens to be in the point lead and it is lightly snowing in a place that doesn't usually get snow. The decision on cancellation should not be based on someone's opinion. An unscrupulous host could cancel to lock in his championship lead. An honest host could feel unduly obligated to *not* cancel and therefore jeopardize the safety of fellow players.

Standalone tourney, not such a huge deal since it doesn't affect a larger picture. A league game within a season, that should be explicitly spelled out before the season starts.

I guess those jokes about a husbands relation to the mother-in-law are not too far off base after all!

Key words in that sentence were mother in law.

My answer to this question is a no!!

My answer is yes.

Never had a weather conflict in the last 6 years.  I've had to cancel the last 2 tournaments due to an ice storm and a 20-inch snowfall, respectively.

And actually, the first one was rescheduled for the end of the season.  This last one may have to end up being cancelled.

I guess its a matter of what people are used to.  Here (front range Colorado) it's got to snow at least 2 feet before anyone would even think about cancelling

Not quite 2 feet here..but we'll get about 4-5 inches on the road before they even start plowing half the time.

Never had weather cancel an event ... then again we're in Florida ... although the game room in my house is quite warm and during a cold snap one time I had people call me to make sure I was hosting, because with people in the room it would've been the warmest room in town!

A few years ago we did have a tourney canceled due to flu. Like 6 people came down with it and nobody really wanted to be around anyone else touching teh same chips, cards, table.

HA!, that's right. Back in 2004, when we got hit 4 times, we were doing just 4 tournaments a year. The last one was supposed to be in September. Didn't get played until November.

It happens at least once a winter here in Montreal, when the amount of snow + ice is so overwhelming that it is downright dangerous to actually go outside....only then do we cancel the game!

No but then i live in Perth Aus so the last time we had snow here was - ummmm never.

mild climate more akin to LA than anything else less the smog of course.

I think the snow in Europe at the moment would mean you have to consider thhat some people are just not going to risk travelling in extreme conditions and therefore likely to end up having to cancelling it.

but i would prefer for people to make their own minds up and just ensure you have enough standbys or extras to fill the gaps.

if it drops to four people consider playing chinese poker its a cool game and 4 max so makes it fun and interesting and keeps the game ticking over when there are not a full table on board.

cheers
