THERE ARE SCREEN SHOTS OF THE FINAL TABLE OF THE POKER STARS APPT SYDNEY EVENT IN HERE.  IF YOU ARE WAITING ON RESULTS FROM THIS THEN THIS IS YOUR OFFICIAL WARNING!!!!!

just in case.....

I was watching the live feed of the Poker Stars APPT Sydney and noticed a few things about the dealing procedure.

First: Is this just a single deck shoe?

I saw two different dealers, one held the shoe and the other left it on the table.

Next: The burn cards were handled much differently.  The pot was always on the dealer's right hand side and the muck on the left hand side.  Here is the flop, turn, and river in sequence and how the burns are placed.

As I started to pay specific attention to the dealers looking for quirks, advantages, etc. I also noticed the top card slide off and expose the next board card.

I kind of like the differences. The shoe helps prevent things like dropping the stub, bottom dealing, etc.  Obviously things that you shouldn't have to worry about at all in a casino or with a competent human at a home game but it happens - as evidenced by some threads starting on here.

I'm not too sure I see any real advantages or drawbacks or where the burn cards are placed other than this.  When both dealers would burn and take three cards for the flop they would almost always somehow brush the burn card with the board cards.  If they got even a little sloppy controlling the board cards they could easily be mixed with the burn.  It wasn't as noticeable on the turn and river but did happen a few times.

I prefer how I, and most - if not all - of us here, have learned to deal the board and handle the burn cards.  The shoe seems like overkill and completely takes the artistic "pitch" out of the deal.

Thoughts?

First off, I would say that having a procedure at all is better than none at all. As long as dealers have specific steps to follow that alone goes a long way toward ensuring a square and smooth running game.

As for the burn cards, if they are going to put them out like they do then I would at least prefer that the first burn card go underneath the first Flop card which would help prevent it from getting accidentally flipped.

How did they deal the Flop? Seems like dealing from the shoe would make it more difficult to deal all three Flop cards face down first before spreading them face up.

I read somewhere that it would be even easier for a dealer to manipulate the card order when using a shoe. Seemed counter-intuitive to me at the time.

Good food for thought at least. I'm sure there are advantages and disadvantages to the different methods and it boils down to the tradeoffs you want to make. Wouldn't be surprised if there is a more optimal dealing procedure than either the one in the video or what we're used to seeing on TV.

Interesting procedure....but I have to agree with Martini...seems like dealing the board among other things would be more difficult.

They brought out the burn card then slid 3 cards out - seems like they used the index, middle, and ring finger to grab one card each - the flopped them as "normal"  <-- our normal anyway  Wink  This was how the next burn card accidentally slid out exposing the next board card.
