Bloody Marvellous

I know Snooker isn't very well known in the US, but it's absolutely huge in the UK.

It's similar to 8 ball Pool Billiards, but the rules and table are slightly different, so I'll give a short breakdown of the game.

The table is larger than a pool table. The balls are smaller, and the pockets are tighter.

1. Players need to pot a red ball, followed by a color (i.e. not red). If they miss a pot, the other player gets to take his turn.
2. Each color has points assigned.
  - Red = 1
  - Yellow = 2
  - Green = 3
  - Brown = 4
  - Blue = 5
  - Pink = 6
  - Black = 7
3. Colors played after a red ball are placed back on the table. Reds stay in the pockets.
4. After all 15 red balls have been potted, the remaining colors have to be played in order of ascending value. Once potted, they are not placed back on the table.
5. Points scored consecutively are called a "Break". A "Break" of 100 points or more is called a "Century" and is quite rare.

What you are about to watch is a classic snooker frame (round) by one of the greatest snooker players of all time: Ronnie O'Sullivan.

I remember watching that one on tv. Ronnie also has the 2nd and 3rd fastest 147 clearance. He is a fantastic talent - when he can be bothered to try hard enough.

Cliff Thorburn, though . . .  saw his maximum when it was the first ever to be televised live.

That was . . . sublime.

Ok, I can't stand playing or watching pool, but even I thought that was epic.

It's just ridiculous.  The control on the cue ball (is it still called that is snooker?  I heard the announcer call it simply "white") is amazing.  He might have left himself 2 or 3 tough shots (for him anyway) and even those he breezed through with relative ease.

Unbelievable.. I love playing snooker, but haven't played it since I've been in Texas.. Played some with a friend when I lived up in Kansas, though.. And not only are the pockets tighter, they have rounded corners, so balls will kick out much easier..

That was insane..

Was the guy double parked or something? Dang! I had to check the rules to see if there is a time limit but I guess he just likes to work fast.

Yeah, I remember him walking out of a game between him and Steven Hendry because he couldn't be arsed to play anymore. I believe he got a fine for that. I guess you could call him the snooker brat Smiley.

This frame started out with Terry Griffith potting the cue ball (yes, it is called that Wink), giving Cliff 4 points before he starts his break.

Started off with a fluke and went on to make snooker history.

At least Cliff took his time during the shots.

...and do they only hire old folks for the job of retrieving the balls from the pockets?

I really don't want to turn this into a O'Sullivan fanpage Smiley, but the sheer talent of the man can be seen as he effortlessly switches between right-handed and left-handed play.

I used to do that playing nine ball at the bars . . .  make some ridiculously stupid shot, and have the drunk tell me I could not do it twice.  Bet that not only could I do it twice, but I'd make it left-handed.  Spent more nights drinking free that way then I can count.

While I like my women to be a bit more than broomsticks with boobs, I do not know how anyone can find Snooki attractive.  I quote Dean Wormer:

Fat, drunk and stupid is no way to go through life.
