Last night I luckily benefited from the worst bet I ever saw.....
19 players left paying 7 spots.....95% chance chop will get extended so that 8 - 10 will get their money back.

Blinds 1000 2000 ante 200

UTG raises to 6000 chips In 3rd position I have  8 of diamonds 8 of clubs and only 1/3 average chip stack 7800 chips and go all in.

Person to my left calls .... the button folds (pocket ten) and utg calls.

I thinking everyone all in and say hope you guys both have AK and am about to show my cards.... player to my left stops me but sees one of my eights which I show to UTG.

Flop comes ace of hearts ace of diamonds 2 of clubs  UTG goes all in player to my left folds (showing pocket nines).

UTG shows  7 of diamonds 7 of hearts and I triple up  Grin table goes crazy and Earl apologizes the remainder of the night!

I'm not a check-it-down type of guy unless it's right on the bubble.  With this many players left, I think this guy is entitled to get some value out of his hand without being ragged by the table.

He probably bet because he was afraid of being outdrawn by KQ, KJ, etc.  He doesn't owe it to the other players to check.
Also, why would you start to show your cards when the other guys in the hand have chips left?  In addition, you aren't supposed to be able to declare that you'll 'check it down.'  That's collusion.
Anyway, there's nothing wrong with betting into a dry side pot.  If this guy thinks it's the best move for him and his 77, then why shouldn't he bet?

I agree.  This whole idea that most players have that "it's us vs the all-in guy" is just so stupid.  People see a few things on TV and they think they have the the whole situation figured out.  With that many players left, it's not like the next guy out puts you in the money.

Yeah, Mr. 77 shouldn't care about you, about UTG, or about the rest of the table.  It's a long way from the bubble, still, and he only cares about maximizing he chances of winning as many chips as he can, and if he thinks forcing out the other players will help, why shouldn't he?  It's far from the worst bet ever.

You guys are all missing the point it's not that he just bid into a dry pot.  it's that he bet into a dry pot knowing I had him beat!

He has to know I have 88 or A8 it's the only 2 hands that make any sense for my bet........

First-or you sure he saw it?  Second, the most noteworthy mistake in the hand is you not waiting until you're sure everybody had folded to show your cards, not his dry pot bluff.  Also, it really, really doesn't matter that much to him if you stay alive or not, does it?  Let's say he's 90% sure that you have 88 (but you could have A8) and he's confident that he'll get it head up-is it not worth doubling you up (as opposed to chips going elsewhere) for that 10% chance?  I'm not saying it's necessarily the right play by any stretch, but it's far from the worst bet ever, as it doesn't really hurt him.

Even if he knows you have an 8, you could have 98, T8, etc., right?  And I agree that the biggest mistake was you inexplicably showing a card.

Or you could've had K-8 suited...or Q-8 suited...or J-8 suited...or 10-8 suited...or 9-8 suited....or 7-8 suited...or 6-8 suited...or 5-8 suited...or 4-8 suited...or 3-8 suited...or 2-8...

Hell, I don't know how you play.  Maybe he figured that you figured you were now getting your money in with a 40% chance...

And you said "I hope you have A-K"....as soon as you said that, I would guess you DIDN'T have A-8.  Why would you hope for 3 outs?!?

My judgement: Worst assessment of a bet ever.
