Alternatives to Painted/Stained Race Track

I'm building a table with a race track, but I was looking at alternatives to staining or painting the track (for the sake of experimenting).  I'd like to use a laminate similar to what you would see on a desk or table.  The problem is I have no idea where to get the laminate.  I know you can buy counter-top laminates at Home Depot, but that's not the same thing you would find on a desk or table is it?  I was hoping someone here has had experience with this, or maybe you guys could offer some advice.

Have you gone down to the store to check it out? I don't know why it wouldn't be the same stuff.

Do you just want the look of a race track?  There are others who have padded and covered the race track with another color playing surface.  Can't help you with the specific question, just thought I'd throw that out there.
