I just got my first plastic deck. Unfotunatly, due to tight budget right now, I could only really afford to go to Wal Mart and get a deck of the cheap Vegas Brand plastic cards. I know a lot of you here play with much nicer decks, but I'm happy with the Vegas cards for now. They may be cheap, but I know they are way better than a plastic coated deck I could get at the same price.

What are a few brands that are nicer than Vegas, but not too much more expensive?

On a value for $$$ basis, you will not find anything better than Copag or Desjgn cards.  Simply put, they are the best value for the dollar.  And I am a devout Modiano lover.  Both are a great card, and each type has unique features that make them a wonderful value.

The pic is missing in this thread : http://forums.homepokertourney.com/index.php/topic,11965.0.html

But You can pick them up at retail outlets in the US for about $3-$4 per deck.  I have these and the Vegas cards and IMO, these are miles ahead of the Vegas cards (Vegas cards are prettier, but WOW are they ridiculously slick).  The Hoyle Club Casino cards actually handle pretty well.  They are not comparable to copag/Modiano/DalNegro/Kem or any of the other higher end cards, but in a pinch for a couple bucks, they serve a purpose well.

Here is nutN's review : http://www.homepokertourney.com/reviews/cards-review-club-casino.htm

That being said, I tend to agree with Milo, if you want nice cards, put some money aside until you can buy a higher end setup.  You can always find specials from Caragails or Trident here on HPT.

I have learned the same lesson with Chips.  Do not "settle", and think that what you buy will be sufficient.  The little niggly things will become HUGE in short order.  Save your pennies and buy a GOOD QUALITY set-up of cards.  As you cannot get samples like you can with chips, I suggest you scan the reviews on this site, and then save the $$$ until you can afford the one that strikes a chord with you.

Or, do what I did, and get one of everything . . . and more of what you like.     Roll Eyes

If you only need one deck, and not a setup, you could go with a deck of Bicycle Prestige, which you can find in lots of normal retail outlets for about $7 or $8 a deck.

They're poker sized with the same faces that most of grew up with, so that's a plus for lots of folks. They're not the finest cards but they're nicer than I expected, honestly. BTW, be sure to get the ones that come in a hard black cardboard case. They're much better than the ones that come in a clear case.

In AUS we pay alot for the Copag, Kems and other plastic cards retail more than $20 a set up sometimes that for one deck.

atlhough i would recommend supporting the poker suppliers on here when comparing prices check out Amazon as well.  I found them much cheaper to land into Aus than the local prices.

cheers

I just aquired a deck of Bicycle Prestige and they are WAY better than the Vegas ones. I really like them. When I first took them out of the box and felt them for the first time I couldn't believe how paper like they felt.

What I really want to get is a set of Kems, Bridge size, 4 Pip

It's ez for us to say hey spend the $15 -20 for a good setup .... but the truth of the matter is that unless you are hosting multi table games or get hooked by the bug and must try everything,  a decent setup will last you 5 -10 years maybe even longer.
$3 a month or 3 vs $15 for a lifetime!

Right now, I'm living in COllege Station, TX and in about a month's time I'll probably be in Huntsville, AL for the summer (but there is a chance I'll still be here in TX).

You don't have to do that, but if you want to, thanks! I can send you a PM of my mailing address if you'd like.

It will be a Bridge Size Set Up if that is ok (otherwise your on your own). PM me your name/addy. I will send it out. I will try tomorrow, but I can't promise. If not tomorrow, then on SUN.

I know I don't have to, but HPT is my favorite non home place to be. As with any forum, we've had a few bad apples here and there, but over all this is a great community.

Can I get the same offer?  I was thinking of making a run down to Ypsi for the July long weekend.  Any games that weekend?

Just trying to be a nice guy. This is a great forum. When I joined cigarherb sent me a handful of sample chips, Rose actually gave me my first high end chip ever (I noticed it in her gallery, commented on it, she shipped it).

Hopefully a few years down the road I'll have enough to be able to give a set away to someone just starting out collecting cards like I am now.

I played on ipoker recently, and picked up enough points to order a deck of these, they seem okay, though I prefer my 4 colored copaq's. These are also Copaq's tho fwiw.
