I'd be really curious to see if there is any correlation between the amount of bad beat complaints and the long term EV of a player. Just sayin'.

None at all, I'm sure.  That would be a silly suggestion.

Nobody really thinks online poker is rigged, that you just can't be the donkeys because they play too bad, that you just need to play bad cards because the fish are winning with them, they you need to just go all in with aces to run out potential chasers, that losing a flop all in with top pair versus a flush draw could only happen to them, or that they'd be a big name pro too if they won every race like the 'stars'.  People who mention hands in which they were outdrawn only want to analyze the hands or just figure that others are curious about some of their hands, and they mention suckouts in their favor or winning hands that hold just as often, if not more, of course.

I am firmly in the don't care camp, post bad beats if u want, I can read or I can ignore.  What I find worse is people who moan about people who post bad beats, why??? and perhaps worse still people who randomly post a bad beat in the middle of strat thread or just appened to a post where it is totally irrelevent.

I'd be really curious to see if there is any correlation between the amount of bad beat complaints and the long term EV of a player. Just sayin'.

Now you've got me curious about two players at my local cardroom. I was playing in a tournament with them a few weeks back. One of them (who is a total maniac) was complaining about all the 'sick beats' he suffers all the time. This then prompted a 'I run the worst in the whole world' row with another (also LAG) player.

Now I'm pretty sure the latter player is -EV as I've talked to him about bankrolls. He had no idea what I was talking about and then went on to tell me told me how much money he'd lost online. This, combined with the fact that he's not one of the regular live winners, makes me pretty sure he's down overall.

The other guy has had a fair amount of live success, so who knows?

Personally, I only ever tell someone about a hand I've played when I'm trying to learn something about the hand. Whether it's a bad beat or not isn't the point.

If someone else tells me a bad beat story, I'll either politely smile and change the subject or, if I know them, I'll tell them to save their breath. Of course if they're looking to analyse the hand, I'm happy to listen (as long as they're prepared to listen too).

Then there are those you complain about people who moan about people who post bad beats. Wink

I don't mind bad beat stories either. And if I see a hand that spectacularly beats the odds then I'm all for hearing about it. However, I believe that sometimes people do not have an accurate assessment of how likely something is to happen like when they are in a race situation and consider it a bad beat.

I wish I could get some of the guys I play with to understand this as well.

Just curious, Josh, as to why that is. Is it because you want them to play better?

The reason I ask is that my home game crowd now seem to have divided into two factions. There are those who want to play a 'better' game and those who want to carry on as they are (either because they already think they're a superstar or they just don't care).

The problem is that the first faction would rather play against 'good' players, because they're sick of getting unlucky against the other faction. The problem is that poker is a game of luck and skill, so you're always going to get unlucky against someone (or vice versa). I tell them to take the long term view and if you continue to get your money in good, you'll reap the rewards (eventually).

Some of them take this on board, but most find it hard to see that - especially when one of the other faction is on a hot streak.
