We've had favorite video game threads before, but I think it's usually older games that people mention (ones we grew up with and all), but I was curious what everyone's favorite current generation games are.
I'll start:  I don't have a 360, but I do have the PS3 and Wii, so that's where my favorites are from.
1.  Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3), easily.  This game is just amazing in every way.  The story is incredible, the changes to the gameplay from previous editions are perfect (namely the cover system), and the missions are a mixture of traditional GTA stuff, with a many new, cool ideas in the game.  Also, the game is loooooooooooooong, which is great.
2.  Resistance:  Fall of Man (PS3).  This game is an exciting, insanely fun first person shooter.  While the game is very linear (unlike GTA), the levels are all exciting and full of surprises.  And the monstrous enemies that you encounter are very creative and exciting to meet.  The selection of weapons in the game is also incredibly fun and cool.
3.  Wii Sports:  Pretty self explanatory.
4.  Fallout 3 (PS3).  This is an action RPG game, that, on it's face, sounds dull (at least to me).  However, it's really engrossing and addicting.  You can truly build your character, and really make him (or her) into the the type of person you want them to be.  I haven't finished this game yet (or come close), so maybe it will get duller in time, but now it's very exciting and fun.  The enemies are awesome and surprising, and the open world nature of the game is outstanding.  I'm still not sure about some of the traditional RPG elements (not really my type of game), but I still really like it.

I could also mention Mario Kart, No More Heroes, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii, and MLB '09 for the PS3.  Also, I haven't tried MSG4 (despite 2ToGo's insistence that I need too...) yet, and haven barely played Resident Evil 5, so those two might well be among the best.

Anyway, anyone else want to share their favorite current generation games?

Rock Band and Wii Sports are great for parties and get-togethers.
My wife loves the Wii Fit.
GTA4 on the 360 is incredible (not sure how different it is from the PS3 version).  It's one of a few games that I can sit down and play for hours and hours and hours...

But COD4 takes the cake in a landslide as far as a favorite of the past few years.

we have the 360.............I'm pretty much a sports game fan. Madden and MLB 08 (got it for 10 bucks)

GOW2 and COD4 were probably the best games I have recently played. We did really enjoy RE5, but there were a few flaws with it.

B

Might have to check out Fallout 3. I keep hearing great things about it.

Left 4 Dead

This is a sleeper of an awesome game.  Anyone who likes zombie horror movies will instantly love Left 4 Dead.  Especially if you can play it multiplayer at it becomes all that much more fun.

Best live shooting game i've ever played for fun.  you can play it co-op and two players can even go online from one system together.

Thanks to A5S, all I ever play anymore is a fully modded up version of MLB 05 for the PC. I don't have any consoles.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread to mention a couple of additions to my best of list:

Infamous (PS3):  I just finished this game and it is absolutely amazing.  It's an open world action oriented game with a great story, but it's the gameplay that makes the game so great.  Also, as you progress in the game you earn new powers (some of which are so cool) and earn experience points that allow for upgrades, which is really fun.  It's a mission based game (similar to GTA) with various fun side missions and other things to do in the game, which keeps it from being to linear or getting boring at all.

Metal Gear Solid 4 (PS3):  My brother convinced me to play the MGS series, and this game is just amazing.  I haven't finished it yet (started it a few days ago), but I already think it's the best of the series and one of the best games I've played.  The controls are great, the different locations and varied gameplay is outstanding and keeps the game incredibly exciting throughout.  I'm really looking forward to seeing and playing the rest of this game.

Mario Kart (Wii):  This has become my favorite game on the Wii.  It's so addictive and perfect for playing with friends.

World at War is the only COD game that I have (or have played).  Is MW (or any of the previous gen ones) worth picking up?  I mean, I like WaW pretty well (haven't played it online, and I've heard that that's where it's really good), but still.

Anyone who hasn't played "Left 4 Dead"  Especially online is really missing out,  its 4 player co-operative is really fun with most players using mic's and requires actual teamwork unlike most shooting games.

I likw Modern Warfare but i won't bother buying anymore online shooters till they have a "no sniper" option in the game set-up      or at least only allow 1 player per team to snipe at a time as it makes the game horribly to feel like a duck in a shooting gallery.

Thanks to Ebay i picked up Guitar Hero world tour with a guitar for $10 and its actually pretty fun, and would be great multiplayer locally.  I wouldn't pay full price for it but at $10 its great.

Xbox 360  (my best games, i.e. spent at least 20-40hrs playing and some more)

- left 4 dead
- oblivion
- fallout 3
- GTA 4
- Mass effect
- COD4 modern warfare
- Dead Rising
- Half Life (orange box)
- Marvel ultimate alliance

(after) I'd try some of these "map packs" except after buying some Oblivion content i'll never download anything for $ again, if your system fails (i am on my 3rd xbox 360) you loose the ability to play your content unless you log into xbox live with your account.   I wait till the full game comes out on 1 disk or i deal without.  If it was a good game with decent stuff i'd pay extra at the start for the full game, i hate downloading stuff and loosing it.

gamertag is :  Phil hutchings on xbox live also if i ever forget that i don't think i have to worry about playing xbox lol

This thread hasn't been used in awhile, so I figured that I'd list another few games worth a mention...

(Click to show/hide)

I played through the campaign and it's a lot of fun.  A really fun and exciting FPS.

(Click to show/hide)

It's way funner that the previous boxing games that I've played (including FNR3, though that game is outstanding as well).  I really like the fight stick controls, and the career mode is outstanding as well.  There are some fighters that I wish they had, but that's not a big deal (and I sure am not going to spend money for fighters every time they come out with a new expansion pack).

(Click to show/hide)

This game is just awesome and such a pleasure to play.  It's very similar to Mario 64 with some improvements.  It's, I think, the best looking game on the Wii and the funnest 'regular' game to play.

(Click to show/hide)

This is the funnest game on the Wii, imo.  It's so addictive and a perfect game for playing with friends.

I completely agree with your review on the last two.  SMG has some levels toward the end that are just plain evil.

I rented FIFA 09 and liked it but I don't have the time to learn all the tricks of sports games right now.

Give Civilization IV a try.  same concept.  Biggest difference is Civ is turn based.

PC  Total War Series *

Rome Total War or Medieval total war    are simply fantastic games

they mix full 3D battles with Thousands of rendered solidiers on the battlefields that hack away at each other and a turn based Civ type game.   I highly recommend both games and just depends on what period of history you prefer whether u would like Rome or Medieval times.

***All the games in this series are fantastic with the exception of the latest one that is set in the 18th century it is buggy and not worth buying

I am also looking forward to trying this WW2 fighter plane game after playing the demo, IRL Sturmkovik or something
- just wondering is any Joysticks work if plugged into a 360 or if there is a 360 joystick ?

Okay, so we've gotten some games and I wanted to mention a couple of good ones.

(Click to show/hide)
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is wonderful and has the spirit and style and the classic games (and the great DS game, of course).  The level designs are wonderful and the co-op aspect works great.

(Click to show/hide)
Dead Space is very fun.  It looks great, the controls are very good, and it's just fun.  And the survival horror aspect works well.  There are some serious 'Oh ^&$%' moments, at least for me.  The tension is outstanding.

We recently got Borderlands and Prototype, so I'm really looking forward to giving those a try as well. Smiley

(Click to show/hide)
Bioshock is awesome and just incredibly fun.  I wasn't too sure about giving it a try, but it's addictive and exciting and I'm glad that we got it.  And you can get it pretty cheap-It's like $18 used and $20 new at gamestop for the PS3 (I assume the 360 is the same price).  I'm eager to play Bioshock 2 after it comes out.

I thought I'd make another post in this thread, and re-rank my favorite current generation games:
1.  Grand Theft Auto IV
2.  Infamous
3.  Metal Gear Solid 4:  Guns of the Patriots
4.  New Super Mario Bros. Wii
5.  Mario Kart Wii
6.  Wii Sports Resort/Wii Sports
7.  Resistance:  Fall of Man
8.  Uncharted:  Drake's Fortune
9.  Batman:  Arkham Asylum
10. Madden NFL '10

I'm not totally sure about this order (and I could see any of the top 3 being number 1.)  If I updated this list in a few months, I'm sure it would look very different, though.  There are just so many great games out right now, and so many more exciting games coming out, as well as some games that I haven't played that I"m sure are great (Uncharted 2, BioShock, Killzone 2, Fear 2, No More Heroes 2, and many others.)

Anyway, I know this post is a bit pointless, but I just felt like making a list.  If anyone else wants to...

that depends.  how does one define "current"?  if i was 80 years old, i might think ALL video games were current... Wink

the last current game i played was HALO...before that, ummmm, zelda?

Zelda is the nuts.  Do you mean NES or SNES Zelda?  Because they're both the stone nuts.

By the way, I might be tempted to make another video game thread tonight, asking about favorite games by console.  The 80 year olds wouldn't have to worry about the definition of 'current' then, right... Huh Huh Huh
Seriously, though, as much as I love the classic games, I can't get that into Donkey Kong, but that's probably just because I'm bad at it.

Just completed
Uncharted 2
If you haven't played the first one you should definitely play that as well (first) but this game has great controls, sweet weapons and one of the best storylines.
It's really like crack - hard to put down and you want it to keep going forever.

Infamous is fun as hell as well.

Can't wait for Bioshock 2 because Bioschock was such an amazing game.

And Dragon Age Origins is a great RPG.

I haven't gotten Uncharted 2 yet (it's still mighty expensive...), but I loved Uncharted so I have no doubt that I'll love Uncharted 2.

Infamous!!!!  I mentioned that as my 2nd favorite PS3 game, and it's just awesome.  It's kind of embarrassing, but I'm already on my third playthrough of the game, and will probably have a few more of this one in time.  The gameplay is just so addicting and fun.

My brother has kept pimping Bioshock to me, but I haven't started playing it yet.  I'm sure I'll enjoy it, though.

I don't really play RPGs, so I can't comment on DAO, but I've heard lots of great things about it.

Yeah out of all the games I've ever played Bioshock is probably the most inventive and strange. It's really just spooky and haunting while having the coolest/smartest weapon and character upgrade system I've ever seen.

I'm not sure how much 2 will compare to the first because it's my understanding that in 2 we are playing a completely different character so I'm not sure about comparing both versions but the first one is entirely in a league of it's own.

wow, didn't notice this before.

I used to play, though not for ages. I was froob, my main was a level 70'ish I think solitus soldier, though I wasn't really happy with my dmg and everything, so started some new alts.

I'm stuck in that lab atm, can't find how to get beyond a certain point, and my guild are mostly busy in non froob realms.

on Tuesday and so far in my playing, it's wonderful.  I love Bioshock, and this is really to be more of the same (which I'm not complaining about at all).  It's just a great game and I'm eager to continue playing this game and seeing how the rest of the game goes.  Rapture is a wonderful and exciting place to visit and explore.

I just borrowed Uncharted 2 and I suppose I'll play it after Bioshock 2.  I'm certainly eager to play it as well.

I also have the God of War Collection to play which I have never played. I wanted to play it in anticipation of God of War III which comes out soon.

I just finished the first GTA IV DLC, Grand Theft Auto:  The Lost and the Damned (me and 2ToGo recently got our hands on an XBox 360, and got this game quickly.)  I'll put my thoughts in a spoiler:

Okay, I got Bioshock 2 last Monday night, started it on Wednesday, and finished it on Thursday.  I'll keep my thoughts on the game in a spoiler box (there will be spoilers about both games in the series, so don't read if you haven't played the games).

NFA and I got a 360 a bit ago and have now acquired and begun to play Left 4 Dead

I have to say, this is absolutely one of the funnest games that I've played.  It's just a blast to play, and playing co-op fighting off hoards of zombies-what can possibly be more awesome and fun than that?

Left for Dead 2 is 100 times better. Mele has been added (chainsaw kicks ass)

I'm still working on Bioshock 2. I'm only a few levels into it. I haven't played in weeks though, just to busy.

Jake loves it!!!

MGS4, but it's even better if you have played all the other games. Atleast those involving Solid Snake and MGS2. Then you acctualy get the whole story much better. My uncle bought MGS4, and I do get some questions from him about certain things that happened in the earlier games.

That's my favorite game.  I can't really come up with enough good things to say about it. Smiley

Heavy Rain is a great experience, iimo.  I know that some just won't like it, as it's barely a game as opposed to an interactive story.  However, it's so exciting and interesting, and personally, I found myself really taking a liking to the characters.  While the story is great, being able to have your actions decide the outcome (as opposed to just passing/failing a level/mission and retrying) really adds a ton, as it's done wonderfully.  I don't really want to say much because I don't want to risk giving any spoilers, but I'd recommend this game to anybody, most certainly.

You should pick up The Ballad of Gay Tony as well (if you didnt already get it with the Liberty City Stories DLC). It's funny as hell and totally worth it.

I got it on the disc with Lost and the Damned but haven't started it yet.  I started playing Left 4 Dead and Beyond Good and Evil (as well as spending a good bit of time trying, and failing so far, to beat Ninja Gaiden on the NES...)  I've been eager to start it though, as I simply love GTA.
