I'm talking to a guy at work last night that's playing in my tourney on Saturday.  I knew eventually he'd start asking questions about how I was running things (what chips, what blinds, ect.) and last night he got me on the phone and started in.  He started off by asking if he needed to bring any of his supplies.  I said that it would prolly be a good idea to bring one of his tables and a few chairs.  Since I didn't say that I wanted to use his chips (like I had done in the past) he wanted to know what kind of chips we were using.  Told him they were 7.2g suited chips, step below the 11.5g suited and dice chips.  He asks what colors we're using.  Told him White, Red and Blue.  His reply, "Only 3.... that won't work."  He then goes on about how the proper way to do a tourney is with White, Red, Green, Blue and Black chips.  Told him how the blinds were set-up and he was silent for a few seconds.  He then says, "man.... I don't think that it'll work all that great starting with 100-200.  And that's gonna be an 8hr game if we play right".  From then on I was "Uh huh" and "Yep" cause I really didn't want to hear any more of his sh%t.  He went on about a few other things too that I can't even remember cause I was so tweeked.  To finish everything off he said that it prolly wouldn't last 8hrs cause he would have everybody's money within 3hrs anyway.  This just really put me on tilt.... even way before the tourney starts.  Just wanted to rant a little.  Thanks everybody.

There's some guys who just take it too seriously.  I am a tournament director at my house and I run a poker league for 9 months out of the year.  We have points, etc.  I have 4 tables and usually have over 20-25 entries for each preliminary tournament (10 total) and about 35 at the two championships.  Some guys will always say they have a better way, but if you've been doing this for a while and everyone comfortable with it, then that's the important thing.  You just need to tell this guy that you'd love to incorporate better procedures into your home tournament, but that you don't want to throw everyone off by making a bunch of new rule changes all at once.  I don't have any idea of the level of your experience as being a tournament director, but HPT has a wealth of info and is really helpful.(as you probably already know).  But I've been bla-bla'ing here - just wanted to say as a tourn. dir. I feel your pain.  There's always someone who doesn't like the station on the radio or whatever, you name it.

Classic law of retailers. You can stock 95 of 100 items, and the first 2 customers will always ask for those 5 items

lol Skiddy!

Thomas, If he was giving me that much crap I would have said, "Buddy, this is my tourney, what you do at your tourney is your bag, this is how i'm running mine and if you don't like the set up, you don't have to play."

The best part about the whole thing is he'll probably go broke super early.  I'd make sure to not have rebuys, just in case he does, so he can't get back in.

Not sure where he gets the idea that you have to use 5 chip colors.. LOL  Sounds like a bit of a tool to me.

Run it how you run it - don't make any changes on his request.

'Cuz that's how they sell the cheap chip sets, so you gotta use them all.  Wink

If you run a good show, keep it going your way.

I wish the people who sell the cheap chip sets would sell them with only 4 colors, and include a good NL Texas Hold'em blinds schedule and suggested distribution, or at least a reference to a good place to find them.

The offical HPT poker sets with chip colors and numbers specifiacally for various tourney sizes.  You could buy a T1000 set or a T10,000 set, or something inbetween  Cheesy Wink

LOL.  He will be so focused on everything that (he thinks) is wrong.  While he’s wondering how you’re going to pull it of with a 3-color set, the blinds will eat him.

I think you will probably have a great tournament.

I'm talking to a guy at work last night that's playing in my tourney on Saturday.

It's your game, your rules.  Often I've told folks:  "Hey, when you take the time and effort to host we'll play your way.  Until then..."

Good luck and tell us how it goes!

Sorry to bring up an older thread, but this sounds like a good idea.

I'm thinking something like get a chip manufacturer to make a set with the HPT logo, then have chip sets available that would cover a 8-10 player tournament, and also make them specialized to allow for easy and quick distribution of chips (exactly the right amount as deemed by the Chip Calculator, plus 50 more or so of each color). You could buy more of the sets if needed.

Time for bed now...must get off HPT...

Well that's poker.  From reading your first post it seemed like maybe he was wanting to bring some outside chips into the game.  Better luck next time.

Better luck next time.  I must admit that's what I was thinking from your first post.  If a new someone was asking me all sorts of details about my chips and equipment before they arrived at a game, I would get suspicious.  Including but not limited to:
What chips do you have - what colors will you use - what value will they have - do you have stickers on them?
What cards do you use - what colors will you use tonight - what size?
