Oval. (no WSOP feature table kidney swimming pool shaped table for me thank you.)
Seats 10 comfortably but will likely only be seating 9.
No track.
NO player chip trays.
No built in cupholders, slide unders if anything.
No ashtrays, smoke outside.
I wouldn't mind a betting line but not necessary to have one either.
If I had a logo I might put it on but it would have to be one that I'm going to be happy with for a long time and that's not likely.
No dealer cut out or paraphernalia of any kind. (Would change my mind on this if a good consumer grade shuffler hit the market.)
Prolly go with a standard green with black rail. Two thick metal column legs with foot railing.

I think the only other doodad I've seen for poker tables that I would consider is a sliding drawer underneath for storage of poker supplies.

I have an octagon that I love but the next table that I build will be something along these lines:

Describe your perfect poker table.

- Shape? (Oval / Kidney / Round / Octagonal / Rectangular) Ellipse
  - Number of seating positions? 8-10
- Racetrack? NO
  - Player chiptray? No
  - Cupholders? No, drink and food carts
  - Ashtrays? Absolutely not!!!
- Bettingline? Nope
- Logo? Toyed with the idea. Seems a bit egotistical though. So I'll probably do it. Wink
- Dealer position? No
  - Dealer chiptray? (lockable?) No
  - Lockbox? No
  - Chip toke slide? No
  - Built in cardshuffler? No
- Materials & Colors?
  - Playing surface? Green

I like oval for large games and octagon for smaller games.

I like burgundy for the color and a dark rail - no racetrack unless its got large cupholders

For my regular table I like a $400-500 portable table because I don't have to worry too much about keeping it perfect. There's enough to concentrate on at the table without having to worry about whether people are leaning on it too hard or messing it up. When it gets old and beat up I can reupholster/modify it. If I want to add a recessed shuffler or monitor I don't have to worry about cutting into a $1,500 table

When I have a dedicated poker room with a permanent table I'll take this table...

60" round (seating for 8, everyone can see the cards, equally well)
camel-colored leather padded rail with brass finishers
Blue felt wall to wall with a betting line, no logo, no racetrack
Natural oak pedistal with routered round base
no lockbox, toke, or shuffler (edited: I meant no cup holders on the felt)
8 under-mounted slide out cup holders

Simple is better

LOL. I just wanted everyone to have a fair chance to expose themselves as idiots.

I can't think why anyone would want one either, but since so many tables are made with player chiptrays I figure there must be a demand for them...

I would definately agree with you but some of the round tables with grooves around the rim are pretty sharp looking.

Here is an example of yes and an example of NO

No Bossier City for me tonight.  Oh well. Undecided

Poker Table;
Two 'Round' shaped solid wood old western 'saloon style' tables to match the 'soon to be' double swinging saloon doors and the 'saloon' themed decor.  Eight player seating per table.  Betting line is the natural line that seperates the wood edge/arm rest/chip stack areas from the actual playing surface.  No dealer position needed since this is a round table that accomodates dealing for everyone around each entire table.

Materials Dark Cherry wood.  No padded railing, rounded smooth edges that are comfortable enough for a 5-8 hour poker game.  The playing surface is brown padded leather.  Sixteen matching solid dark cherry wood chairs.  Drinks kept in matching cherry wood drink carts/stands (4 per table) that will hold two drinks each.  Ashtray is an almost empty beer can 'outside' the house.

The built in shufflers are the actual players at the table. Wink  Extra chips and cash are all kept locked in a small safe that only I have the keys to.  Security is provided by the assistance of Smith and Wesson and two American Staffordshire Terriers.   Cool

I haven't tried many variants, but from my point of view (for dealing and playing).

For a dedicated non-playing dealer I think something like kidney shaped (makes it easier for the dealer to pitch to all seats).

As for round vs oval, I think the oval shape is needed to have good space for the board cards and the pot while still allowing the dealer to reach.

And this of course means 10-12 places (depending on how cramped you want to go).

Cloth on the whole table, and a low rail to keep cards from sliding off then table.

I think a betting line together with house rules for it would make things easier, but the betting line shouldn't be to close to the rail.

Cup holders and ashtrays?? Maybe slide out versions, but I think I prefer side tables to keep drinks and ash away from the table (I would'nt allow smoking at the table anyway). And no chip trays (except maybe for the dealer, if it's for cash game).

That's a drop slide that sits over a drop box in the table. The dealer rakes the pot after it reaches certain intervals and puts the chips flat in the slot area. After the hand is done the dealer pulls the spring loaded handle and the chips drop into the box below. A table might have two different drops, one for rake and one for bonus hand payouts. I've never seen it used for tips though since the dealer usually taps the table then puts the tip directly into pocket.

Describe your perfect poker table.

Depends on who's playing at it.
If we're talking about a 6-7max. home game where players DO know proper dealing procedure and execute it, I'd go for a round one.
If it's 8-10players and people are too lazy, or unable to deal properly, but are willing to pay a permanent dealer. I'd want to have an oval one.
If players are dumb when it comes to betting etiquette, I'd add a betting line.

Now, I could go on with "If..." scenarios like this forever, but if we are talking about the perfect poker table in a perfect game; no dumb people, professional dealer, nice chips and cards, nice chairs etc etc. and provided that money was no issue, my perfect table would have the following features:

8 players max.

Half-circle shape (so that seat 1 can look straight at seat 8 without the dealer blocking the view)

dark-green speed cloth (not suited though)

black leather rail (almost level with the playing surface, not those elevated rails you see on tv, but more like the table's rails at Teddy KGB's place in the movie Rounders, or like the rail in Casino Royale - see above)

Built-in shuffling machine (not shuffle master, but high-end, silent and rather fast)

NO cupholders, but a by-stand table for each player (for drinks, food, snacks)

NO racetrack (I don't like the noise of chips on wood)

NO betting line (it's not Kindergarden where children play not knowing how to make a clear forward-motion, it's grown-up gentlemen)

NO chip tray, as the perfect table stands in a perfect room where there is a small cashier cage right next to the bar.

Of course, the perfect table stand in a perfect room with a bar where a bartender mixes you a drink and where a nice looking waitress brings you snacks. There is of course a piano player playing smooth jazz with a female singer.
No smoking allowed though. And of course the perfect table has nice chairs.

Really depends on the game.  That said, the best all purpose table would be:

Oval
Ten Positions
No racetrack
No player chip tray
No cupholders (use the slide-ins, if you must).
No ashtrays (hell, no smoking in the house!)
No betting line
I could go either way on a logo, but prolly not
No dealer position (no dealer chip tray) -- would prefer a separate custom made chip case with a lockable drop box.
No lockbox
No chip toke slide
Built in Shuffletech would be awesome.
Wood
I think I am partial to red fabric, though green is a classic look too.
Volara for firmness covered with a piece of headliner to dampen the chip bounce
I like a raised rail, 5" wide (black is fine, but another complimentary color to the fabric is good too.

Must have a nice pedestal.
