Hi everyone,

We just received some hot new cards from Fournier called Tribus. The new deck features a unique back design in black and gold:

These are poker size, 100% plastic cards with two standard index faces - something that until now was missing from the Fournier lineup. Plus they come with a nice flip-top plastic case. Almost forgot to mention that they are on sale for a few days; you'll find them here:

http://www.tridentcards.com/100%25+Plastic/Fournier/Fournier+Tribus+Poker+Standard+Index.html

As we close the first half of the year we'd like to thank you for being great customers and friends. We continue to grow very quickly and as a result I haven't kept up with some of you offline. We're been working on sourcing new products and building new sales channels, with the upside being more choices for you.

Best,

My feelings exactly.

Alex, do the folks at Fornier understand that almost all poker is played with standard bridge size cards?

Jambine (and Rose),

I know that some of the new products coming out are poker-size and folks who like bridge-size probably feel like they are getting left out. On the consumer side of the house, I believe that poker-size actually is more popular. (On the casino side, I believe that blackjack actually drives most of the production).

In Fournier's case, they already have a very nice selection of bridge-size cards. The designs, in my opinion, have broad appeal and we carry the entire line. But the poker-size lineup is fairly narrow (no pun intended). Plus we didn't have the "2SI" configuration that is popular on our side of the Atlantic. So that is the background for these cards which, yes, are hot. And the plans are for more of these in poker size.

There's new stuff in the horizon that I think you all will like. If you want to be involved in the direction of some of the new products, then please let me know. Thank you.

Best,

So very badly, I do.

Seriously, thanks for the info Alex.  And it's definitely not just Fournier that's guilty of what seems to be (from us bridge-sized lovers' view) a single-mindedness in creating new and exciting designs.  It's very similar to the motorcycle industry in a lot of ways, which by and large continues to ignore a fairly untapped market of female (and shorter male) riders, though they've gotten better over the years.  I"m grateful for the Softail line, without which I'd probably be doomed to buying a Harley Sportster (eww) if I wanted to keep riding.  And don't get me started on Buell, a company that seems to think every rider is 6 feet tall, except for beginning riders of their Buell Blast model, who are all under 5 feet.

In the end, those manufacturers that make the effort to included more bridge-sized cards in their lineup, even in the face of sales data that may show poker-size is more popular, will always, always get my gratitude.  And even more importantly, my business.

I really like the design and was about to order a setup when I discovered, well, there isn't a setup.  A little disappointing.

They do make that effort, Rose, and Fournier is a good example. We stock entire lines of bridge-size cards.

I didn't follow your comment, though, did you stop riding a Harley because of the size?

In any event, we expect Tribus to do well. This is the first time that folks have been milling around the warehouse to checkout a new product. It looks great. Thank you.

Understood; but what I was getting at was that a lot of manufacturers seem to be slow in introducing new bridge sizes to their lineups.

No (though I was actually speaking of Buells, the sporty version of Harleys); but I am not able to enjoy certain models due to size limitations.  If it were up to Buell, I'd be forever stuck with a grossly underpowered Buell Blast (a bike so wimpy, it should come with training wheels).

Rose, not too long ago we reviewed the designs of a manufacturer's new line of bridge-size sets. I believe they come out less frequently, but as complete lines. The reason they traditionally come in sets (outside of casinos), I believe, has a lot more to do with the game of bridge than Texas Hold'em. Our customers, who we believe are largely serious card players, increasingly are buying cards as "mashups" of different brands, colors, sizes and styles. And that is why I believe that Tribus is a very sophisticated product, aside from the design, quality, and packaging.

If you want to promote a new bridge set here, that's fine with me.

By the way, ever since I've known you I've been thinking more and more about a BMW R1200. Thanks. aF

That makes sense.  I wasn't bemoaning the poker-size cards, only the perceived lack of an equal number of bridge-size cards.

And for the record, I'm not at all complaining about the Tribus cards.  I think they're awesome.  And though I'll always be a bridge lover, until those come along, I can definitely see these cards in my future.  If only to have them on display, since I still think that back design is sexy style.

Alex just recieved a deck of Fornier Tribus with no packing slip from Casa Antiua LLC.

Is that you.  If so recieved someone elses order or somehow got these instead of the setup of piatniks I won in the Trident giveaway.

If it was a mistake instead of the piatnniks this is cool as you have been more then good and fair to me over the years.  If it was somebody elses order they probably have my P:iatniksLOL

I received my Tribus cards I won in the giveaway also.  Grin

These are really nice cards. I also prefer bridge size but I have no complaints with these, great design & feel. This is my first deck of Fourniers and definitely not my last. The Tribus cards also come with the best single-deck plastic case I've seen.

Alex - Any chance of getting these cases from Fournier to sell on Trident.com?

Also, thanks again for the giveaway. Your excellent CS and involvement in the forums guarantee that you're my #1 choice for all playing card purchases.

Hi all,

First, congratulations to all of the giveaway winners. We appreciate everyone's participation and, of course, everyone's kind words.

I saw a prototype of the cases when I visited Fournier earlier this year. My first question was: "Can we buy the cases separately?" The answer was "No!" Fournier spent a lot of time and effort on the cases and they only want them to be sold with Fournier cards.

(These little cases are difficult to photograph - the image on Trident Cards essentially is a drawing, but we're putting together a video next month that hopefully will show off the case and the cards a little better.)

We already had been talking with Fournier about doing a card with a back design that was a little "different." Fournier has a beautiful and extensive line of bridge-size cards (repeat: beautiful and extensive line of bridge size cards). But the poker-size lineup was a bit "conservative" in terms of the back designs. So the new design and the case came together when I was in Spain and here we are talking about the finished product.

Some of you know that we do some design work and Tribus actually is our design (along with Elements, which was drawn by the same artist). It's now time to start thinking of a companion deck for Tribus. The idea here is that each deck will have a different "theme" and, although different, each back design will be done in a similar, edgy style. Some ideas we're tossing around in terms of themes are Ancient Egypt, Afghan War Rugs, and Aztec. If you have any thoughts on the next theme, please jot them down there. Thank you.

Best,

Fair enough. Gives me an excuse to get more beautiful cards.  Grin

Wow, I didn't realise that was your design. Great work.

Shocked Like with AK's and grenade launchers?

Seriously, those ideas sound good. My personal favorite among Fourniers is the Alfombros; which, I would guess, would be similar to what you had in mind for an Afghan War Rug. Also, an Egyptian design would probably be a must have for anyone that owns a set of the Paulson Pharaohs.

When we used to live in Washington, D.C. we would go to the Georgetown Flea Market once in a blue moon. A rug trader there had heaps of these war rugs - really, really interesting. These are "oriental" rugs that, instead of having floral or geometric patterns, have patterns made up with AK-47s, attack helicopters, ammo, etc. They were first made, I think, during the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980s. Always wanted one.

Another option is to reverse the colors on the Tribus for a true "set" - any thoughts on that? aF

I think most people buying plastic cards are used to buying 2 deck sets and doing this may stimulate sales of the Tribus overall. Just curious; how have other single decks sold (like the Fournier EPT's among others)? Do you sell single decks much or do people usually buy one of each color when they order?

As for the Afghan War Rug decks, I would definitely be interested in seeing this. Some of the designs that I linked to in a previous post are really interesting and I think they would have a certain niche market just because they look so badass.  Smiley

I'm impressed that you're so proactive in bringing new designs to the high end playing card market. You're off to a great start with the Fournier Tribus deck, I'm really excited to see what you come up with next.

I think the trend clearly is towards "unbundling" and the Tribus series will go that way - but I have a feeling we're going to hear the squeak, squeak, squeak of Jambine, DD & company.  Wink aF
