Author Topic: Why two different tie breakers in Stud?  (Read 381 times)

While looking up the split pot rules for another thread I ran across the rule for splitting pots in Stud and wondered why there are two ways to break  in rank.

On third street the bring in is determined by rank, ties broken by suit.

After the bring in the person to act first is determined by hand value, ties broken by position to left of the dealer.

Once the hand is over, two identical hands will split the pot with the odd chip going to highest card, ties broken by suit again.

IMO, always using position to the left of the dealer OR suit would make more sense than sometimes one and other times the other. Any idea why ties are broken in different ways like this?

I can't asnwer the question totally, but I can say surely that the 3rd street tiebreaker would have to be suit and not seat position because it would put Seat 1 at a disadvantage because Seat 1 always gets the first card dealt.

Dang! I should have figured that one out on my own. We never play dedicated Stud, just during Dealer's Choice so we move the button each hand to make it easier to keep track of when an orbit is complete.

But that begs the follow up question of why suit isn't used for tie breakers on other streets. Theoretically, Seat 10 would have position on the table more often than any other seat if the button is stationary.

Interesting. I've never played in a stud game where a suit was used to determine who got an odd chip. Home games always gave any odd chips to the refreshment fund. It was never a denomination that was big enough to worry about. It's been so long since I've played stud in a casino that I honestly don't remember how they handled this situation.     Huh
