The server computer that this website is hosted on will be moved from L.A. to San Diego on March 4th at 8pm Eastern Time. The entire HomePokerTourney website (main site, forums, and portal) will be totally inaccessible for about 6 to 8 hours.

Apart from the fact that there will be HPT'ers going through withdrawals, physically moving servers seems like an odd way for a hosting company to change locations. I would have expected mirroring data or doing a backup/restore instead...or something.

That was my reaction too.  I mean, it's 2009 afterall.

I am surprised with this process as well.

I got a call from Lunarpages (my hosting company) and it went something like ... "Just calling to inform you that we are physically moving your server from L.A. to San Diego due to consistant electrical problems with our L.A. datacenter. blah, blah, blah. Your server and all your websites will be offline for 6 to 8 hours (my heart drops) while we move your server (I visualize a couple guys disconnecting the server, tossing it into a truck and driving to San Diego). Your IP Address will change (Oh just great!) when we reboot your server at our new datacenter. You will have to alter all your site's namesevers with your domain name registrar (Yeah, yeah) and your site will remain offline until your new domain address propagates throughout the internet (usually takes a couple hours)."

I am presently in the process of backing up everything from my server to my corporate headquarters computer so the site might be a little slow tonight.

Hello,

VPS2 will be moved on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 around 5pm Pacific time. This move will be to transfer the server from our Los Angeles datacenter to our San Diego datacenter. We will be physically moving the machine to San Diego. During this move, the server will be offline for approximately 6-8 hours to transport the box to the new location, then we will reboot it up at the new datacenter.
