Is there any better feeling than someone raising you when you have the absolute scooped nuts?  If there's something that feels better, i damn well better be in bed when it happens.

since your bringing up the hi/lo games, I would be open to any suggestions or basic strategies for this style of game.

I have been studying online articles just incase I can make the HORSE tourney.

I should move this to the strategies section.  I'm still tingling from that last win.

The next game is Stud hi/lo (my favorite HORSE game, with razz being the second favorite and Omaha hi/lo the third).  Is that what you wanted to discuss, or HORSE in general?

No worries, I didn't really know where it should've been at first, until you mentioned strategies.  So you did me a favor.

Answer: Calling with the scoop nuts after someone has pushed all of their chips in.

You make a good point, but ultimately, that's the end of the chase, which is always anti-climatic.  The real thrill is being the predator, when the prey thinks he's the one doing the chasing.

Yep.  It's getting raised by more than one person in the exact same situation.

Man, it's embarrassing how much people let their egos get in the way of good play.  I can just hear the thought running through their heads..."She can't possibly have me this time, can she?"

So why doesn't this good play work for me in live games the way it seems to lately online?

I also LOVE hi/low games.
The best very quick advice on Stud/8 that I can give is that you ought not get yourself invested drawing one way.  You are giving up a TON of equity if your opponent(s) can win two ways while you are going only one.  In a head up pot, notice as early as possible (maybe third street in stud, but whenever you realize your situation) that you are chasing only half of what's in the pot, and how much you'll pay to see it through.  Too many players call 5th, 6th, and 7th to win something like 3 antes, 1.5 bring ins, 1 call on third, and 1 on fourth.  That would mean that they on 5th, they are beginning on chain of events that once begun, can't be stopped, and that will cost them more than they are trying to win (I do know that often, you do have a chance to scoop in this case if things fall perfectly, and that would more than triple what I just said that they are trying to win, but that is usually too unlikely to make up for the distinct loss of equity here).  This situation can occur when you're chasing for a low just as easily as high, but it is much easier to recognize early on when you're incorrectly chasing high than when you're chasing low.

Also, don't be quick to enter just because you possess a three low hand.  That just doesn't work; you must be observant of the action before doing that.  For instance, a limp from a six and a raise from a two might (and I do mean might) tell you plenty enough that your 8-7-2 is not a good hand to come in with.  Also, remember that you often want to charge bad prices to hands drawing low if they can beat you out of a low (which often will mean doing something such as looking for a spot to check and raise to charge two bets to a low draw; you must look for the right spot, though).

Also, don't be over eager to defend with poor bring in hands against a raise.  Also, don't be over eager to play hands that put you in a hole to begin, such as jack-eight-three suited.  Often, these hands lead you to getting in a hole early, as you seem to only be halfway high and low at the outset, and only a low card of your suit gives you something positive to play on fourth street.

I am terrible at limit O/8, so I won't babble about that game at all.

I hope that this advice helps; I know it's not the best advice, but I saw that no advice had been given yet.  Good luck...

Excellent advice.  Low hands can really suck your money out.  You may not even get 1/2 the pot.  Even with the nut low hand, you may only get 1/3 of 1/2 the pot (or worse, 1/4 of 1/2).

Ok, I just tried out triple draw 2-7 for the first time for play money on P*.  I now know my true poker calling is hi/lo games, because I'm hooked on this.

...and now, I have my first TD 2-7 lowball question:

Player A has lo: A,7,6,3,2 rainbow
Player B has lo: 9,6,4,3,2 rainbow

Who wins?

[Edit: nevermind, I remember now why it's 2, and not A-7.

That stinks. But, oh well.]

I remember a few months ago I was playing $2/$4 Omaha Hi/Lo at the Borgata and by the river, I had the nuts both ways (referred to as Nut,Nut) Even to the river, there was like 5 players in the pot and it would go bet, raise, reraise, cap, even before it hits me. And you are just sitting there saying, "I WANT TO PUT MORE MONEY IN!" Oh well, needless to say, I took 3/4 of that pot because one guy ended up having the wheel as i did, but I had the but flush for the high with no Full House possibility out there. So thats always fun having the absolute nuts both ways and having it being raise reraised and capped in front of you.

I thought most low games required 8 or less to have a functional low hand.  Why would the 9 come into play here?

Congrats Rose.

I had a similar experience a while back where I ended up being against KK (SB) and AA (BB).  I had QQ in late pos.  I raise about 4X BB and both just call me pre-flop.  Flop is A Q Q (good thing it was online because my eyes about popped out of my head when I saw the flop)   SB pushes all-in, BB goes all-in over him and I have both of them covered. Biggest pot I think I've won since I've been playing on line.  Too bad I didn't hit the BB jackpot though, I would have had to clean my pants out on that. Grin

Only if the game says high/ low 8 or better.  If it only says high/low then the rule doesn't apply.

8 low is the qualifyer for hi/low split games.  2-7 low ball is a straight low game.

Because only some, but not all, low games require it.  Triple doesn't, nor does Razz.  In fact, as I think of it, only the low games that specify "8s or better", require it.

[ok, next time, I'll read the rest of the thread before I reply.]

And the "type" of game is what will determine if the A is high or low.  In Razz, it is low.  In 3draw, it is high.  Same thing with st8 and flushes ... in razz they are ignored, but in 3draw they are in play.
