Just utter the words "If I'm going to play for cash, I'm going to play for real.  And since y'all don't want to use any rules, you aren't playing for real.  I'd rather go play the random dice game.  Same difference, really."

Guess I won't be invited to next year's Christmas party with that bunch.

Dare I ask what rules were not being followed?

Any.  Literally.  This was the crew that at last year's party proudly declared "we play sloppy poker here".  I took their money from them then, but when they said they weren't following any rules this year, I drew the line.  Life's too short to throw my money in the furnace like that.

I completely agree.  It's one thing to play bar poker for free but there is no way I'm going to play it for money.

I think a better way to start a fight is to start wagering money with absolutely no ground rules. The reason why poker is such a great game is that people are pretty much universally motivated by money. Start throwing money in a pile and make up the rules as you go along and see how long that stays fun or friendly.

Better offer, babe.  I'd come and get fleeced by you, but I'd rather get fleeced by Michael, eh?

I'm guessing you cleaned up at "random dice"

Nope, I lost the $3 at CLR (which is actually a pretty fun game) then played with myself the rest of the time.

Wait, I played solitaire the rest of the time.

That's what it says on the label, but "CLR" trips off the tongue better.

If they weren't playing by any rules then you should have just hollored out whatever cards you had wins and scooped the pot. Bet some rules would have started coming out then.

I was disappointed with the clarification.  We could use a little spice around here for the holidays.

On a serious note thank you for standing up for the game and yourself.

I cannot wait to meet you, next time I'm Down Under.  New Zealand, right?

He didn't; I didn't tell him.  He works the kind of job that it's vital that he remains tight with his co-workers; I couldn't afford to have him aggravated by them (or vice-versa).
