I saw it yesterday. Worth seeing at the theatre.

My ranking system of movies:

1. Must see at theatre.
2. Worth seeing at a theatre.
3. Good Rental
4. Worth Renting if you have time to kill.
5. Waste of Time

I agree. We saw it a few weeks ago. Jake and I both really liked it.

Jake went to see Journey to the Center of the Earth with my parents. He said the only thing he liked about it was the 3D effects. He said the only movie he has seen recently that was worse than this was 10,000's B.C. Grin

This is coming from an 11 yr old, lol

Were going to see Hellboy II on MON. Its getting great reviews at http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/hellboy_2_the_golden_army/

Its at 87% on the Tomatometer, 117 positive and 17 negative, pretty impressive.

I loved Hellboy II. The villain this time is great and his sister is hot - well, in a geeky way. Grin

I just saw "Turn The River" with Rip Torn and Fammke Janssen.

I really liked it. It's mostly about pool gambling and less about poker as the name suggests. Rip Torn is freaking great in his role and of course Fammke Janssen is amazing especially as a hot, tough, strung out gambler trying to find a big game.

http://www.youtube.com/v/ROzg2o0G9fs

I highly recommend it. Unless you dislike really well-directed and shot independent films with dark themes...

Keanu did pretty good in Street Kings, Point Break, and The Matrix. the rest of them were mediocre at best

he stunk in Devil's Advocate in comparison to the other great actors/actresses.

Speaking of Keanu Reeves, One night about 4 years ago in Beverly **** Estates, I was working a security detail in front of Stallones mansion because there was this big party next to Sly's property and Sly has had problems in the past -w- drunk idiots ringing his gate from these loud parties and asking for him via the intercom.
I was instructed by my boss to remain parked there for a good 8 hour shift. During that very boring assignment I heard the announcement by the deejay introducing Keanu Reeves. He sang 'Happy Birthday' to someone, and he sounded mighty flaky i.m.o. Bad singer and not such a great actor if you ask me. Sorry if I offended any Keanu fans out there.

I've watched almost nothing but comedies lately due to trying to pick my mood up rom the loss of my best friend a few weeks ago so I figured I'd throw a few reviews up:

These are all rentals btw, I rarely see comedy in theatre:

Strange Wilderness: Huge disappointment considering the cast, I actually phoned my cable provider and got my money back, lol.

Mama's Boy: Jon Heder and Jeff Daniels. Funny as hell, I don't think I've laughed harder in a long time and actually fairly clean too, ok for kids IMO.

Heartbreak Kid: Farelly Brothers remake. I'm not a huge Ben Stiller fan but the rest of the cast makes this worth a rent. and Malin Akerman...hmm where's the celebrity crushes thread?

Meet the Spartans: 45 minutes of brilliant material + 45 minutes of my life I want back make for 90 minutes of a fairly unusual uneven comedy. Like 2 guys wrote it without consulting each other.

Semi-Pro: Was really restless one night and got it, and its actually not bad. Will Ferrell is starting to grow on me a bit.

If you havent seen it yet, The Big Lebowski is friggin HILARIOUS! But a word of warning, there are more F Bombs in this movie than in Scarface.

That could be just awesome. Or it could be terrible. Or it could be like Lethal Weapon 4 and just be mediocre. We'll have to wait and see.

Saw Eagle Eye on the weekend, better than expected considering the hype and I loved the ending.

Took my nieces to Beverly Hills Chihuahua too, it's actually tolerable to sit through as an adult. Good choice to those with little ones.

Interesting; I hated the ending. Ah well, Strokes For Folks.

And I snicker at the thought of LW5. It's 4 Weapons too many.

AMEN!!!!!

I thought they should have stopped making them after the first movie. The best thing i can say for the first sequel is that it was tolerable. Third and Fourth both sucked.

I don't plan on Eagle Eye. It just looks bad IMO.

Lethal Weapon 2 is my favorite of the series, so maybe it's just 3 too many.

We rented a couple of movies over the last week. I picked Traitor, and my son picked Mummy 3.

I liked Traitor. Thought it was a good, solid movie. It might be a tad slow for some viewers, but I didn't mind.

Mummy 3 is godawful.

Mummy 1---barely tolerable

Mummy 2---just plain bad

Mummy 3---godawful. The wife from the first two movies didn't return (she was about the only thing I liked from the Mummy Movies). The actor who plays their adult son in this movie is a bad actor. I hate watching bad acting more than anything.

I never even heard of Eagle Eye or the Lethal Weapon sequels after LW2.

I actually like Shia Labeouf as an actor. I remember when Holes came out and I was so reluctant to watch it with my little brother and sister because I always hated the kids shows on disney and nickelodeon. But Holes was fun and I remember thinking "that kid is gonna go places". And he did and he will. I liked him in Transformers, Disturbia, IJ and the Crystal Skull. I think I'll have to check Eagle Eye out.

That Michelle Monaghan from the film looks exactly like Tiffany Michelle from WSOP fame. No?

Yeah, just watched Eagle Eye and Ruins.

Wow, I liked both of them a lot.

I watched Ruins last night and I gotta say it freaked me out a bit. I actually wish I had read the book though. Might download it.

And Eagle Eye was really fast paced. Hard to believe that could happen but it's a movie and it kept me glued to the screen. And yeah there are moments that Michelle Monaghan resembles Tiffany Michelle but I've seen Ms. Monaghan in other things and she's a good actress as well as being easy on the eyes. Billy Bob had a good turn at the FBI agent role. And Rosario was also good.

Well, then maybe I should make it a point to always watch the movies first because otherwise I will always be disappointed with the movies.

The other i rented was Burn After Reading which I'm gonna watch now. I'll get back to you.

EDIT: and how many Beethoven movies can there be? oh wait this time Jonathan Silverman is in it? wow. How'd he get that role or should I say how did the producers get such a big star to take that role? Roll Eyes

true...................sorry, I like to state the obvious.

Anyway's, I watched a few movies this weekend. None are "new" by the way.

Equilibrium which I posted about in the sci fi thread, loved it.

Blood Diamonds- I would definitely recommend. Dicaprio does a superb job

Crash-I liked it, but several friends/family had really hyped up the movie and honestly it didn't hold up to my expectations of it. Definitely worth watching, just not as good as I had thought it was going to be.

Equilibrium is an awesome flick, Was recommended to me back in college after a Matrix discussion in class and I think I liked it better.

Blood Diamond was good to, and I typically stay away from DiCaprio movies. Hounsou(sp?) is such a believable actor.

Crash... I assume you mean newer one. I liked it a lot. The one with Spader/Hunter is worth a watch to.

I recently watched Traitor myself, which I loved.. nice passive intensity to it. Also saw Righteous Kill which was too predicatable to me.

You definitely have an arguement for it being the better movie. I loved Matrix. Hated both of the sequels.

As for Taken, I want to see it, but I can wait for the dollar theatre or video.

Watched "Blindness" this morning. I'm a fan of Julianne Moore. It's rental worthy if you have spare time. I wouldn't make the time for it though. I really liked the concept. I think they took an easy path with the movie. The first 10-15 minutes is pretty good, then the last 10 minutes is pretty good (minus the last 60 seconds).

I would have liked to have seen more of the chaos within the city limits vs inside the quarantined walls.

I watched The Host on Friday I think and I loved it.
I tend to be a big fan of Korean cinema but that's not why I'm recommending this.
It's a Korean horror flick with a mutated water monster terrorizing a Korean waterfront. It's really very cool. The special effects can be hit and miss at times but mostly I thought they were amazing because they pulled it off so well. There is a lot of humor and heart and a lot of thrills and action. It's really just plain fun. I highly recommend it.

We watched a few DVDs recently.
Vicky Cristina, Barcelona - I enjoyed it, thought the acting and writing was excellent but it was different from any previous Woody Allen film.
Eagle Eye - Nice, fast-paced entertainment. Cool concept and some good actions scenes.
Body of Lies - I don't even remember this Russell Crowe/ DiCaprio film appearing in the theaters but I enjoyed it. I though it was very well done and it wasn't until the end credits when I realized Ridley Scott directed it. Similar in style to Black Hawk Down.
Australia - My wife wanted to see it and we turned it off after an agonizing 22 minutes. I like Baz Lurhmann films but this was just baaad.
Flash of Genius - I was wondering if they could pull off a two hour movie about the invention of intermentient windshield wipers and they did. Good film but watch it for free on cable or something.
Frozen River - the best of the bunch. Quiet film with excellent acting and screenplay, nominated for both. Recommended for those who like quiet dramas.

Dude, thanks for those reviews. I have yet to see most of these...

I have seen Eagle Eye and really enjoyed it.

I'm waiting on the rest of these from Netflix. I was wondering about Vicky, Christina, Barcelona. I'm a big Woody Allen fan from way back so his latest stuff is usually hit or miss but for the most part I enjoy it.

And I've always liked Greg Kinnear's acting ever since As Good As It Gets so I'm looking forward to Flash of Genius as well.

Watched The Reader last night, very good movie and I usually loathe dramas. It keeps your interest albeit a bit of a slow pace.

I'm really interested in this. Kate Winslet has always been a great actress but she sure tore up the awards scene this year and really increased her star power. Of course it doesn't hurt being married to a great director like Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition, Jarhead and Revolutionary Road).

We share similar tastes, OWG. Like you, I'm a big fan of Woody Allen, especially most of his work from Manhattan back. Since then, it's hit and miss but I think you'll enjoy VCB if for no other reason than Scarlet J. As for Flash of Genius, Kinnear does a really good job in this one and carries it well. Most of his performance in this one is subtle so pay attention to the nuances.

I'm also looking forward to the Sam Mendes pic, The Reader. I was a HUGE fan of Road to Perdition and thought it was probably the best movie of that year (2002.)

I'm looking forward to seeing Body of Lies. I like L.D. and G. C.

I"m going to have to disagree with Eagle Eye. I did not like it at all. I respect it as a "mindless popcorn" flick. Nothing more. I'm not hating on "mindless popcorn" movies. I have a boatload of them that I like. This one just didn't do it for me. Jake loved it.

OWG, The Host is on my Netflix list. I only do one movie at a time, so it might take awhile.

I had seen it before, two nights ago we watch Pan's Labrynth. A really good movie IMHO. The wife had never seen it, she really enjoyed it as well.

Lots of good tips in this thread.

Loved Vicky Cristina, Barcelona. Im a Woody Allen fan and had been looking forward to seing this one.

On my to do list:
The Reader
Frozen River
Flash of Genius

Thumbs up for:
Eagle Eye and Body of Lies.

Anyone seen The International or State of Play yet? Might be a bit early for State of Play...

I highly recommend 7 Pounds for those who haven't seen it yet. My wife and I really enjoyed the story line. Will Smith was very good.

DD, I loved Pan's Labyrinth. It is very stylistic and the soundtrack is awesome too. I don't mind subtitled films at all but my Dad is almost deadest against them. Still, I convinced him to see this film and he enjoyed it as well.

I actually 'rent' DVDs from my local library. It's free and they deliver to my local branch, located only a mile or two away. Gotta love that.

I've got 7 pounds on my list too. I usually enjoy Will Smith's acting so thanks for the recommendation, Pathand. I've also got The Reader, Doubt, Slumdog, Milk and about a dozen others on my list.

We do share some similar tastes in films.

Speaking of subtitled films. I actually prefer subtitles even for some English language films. It sounds strange but there are some DVDs where I will turn on the subtitles for hearing impaired just so that I can get more from the dialogue in more complicated plot lines. One such film was Syriana. I didn't have a problem following the film at all. I thought it was excellent. I guess you might call it cheating.

And as far as foreign films go I am a huge fan of Japanese, French, Romanian, Korean, Chinese, Italian, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, Indian, Thai, etc etc. I love foreign films. I find that each culture has a certain underlying "style" or feel but the stories and characters are universal. And I've heard of people turning the sound down for foreign DVDs because they don't need to hear the dialogue. I am the opposite. I have to hear the language. I love the sound of the Japanese, Romanian and Russian languages the most I suppose.

Also I should recommend Elegy to anyone who likes more "sophisticated" films and anyone who admires the beauty of Penelope Cruz. Ben Kingsley's character remarks in the film that she is a work of art. And she most definitely is - unbelievably attractive, especially nude. The film is an adaptation of the Philip Roth novel, The Dying Animal. I hear that it is an excellent adaptation as well. I haven't read the novel but I may have to read some Philip Roth now.

Funny thing is I will watch something like Elegy and then watch Pineapple Express or Zack and Miri Make a Porno and be just as entertained. I'm weird like that.

Which reminds both Pineapple Express and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were hilarious. I also recently watched Role Models and at first I was not really impressed but by the end the movie really was entertaining. I'm a big fan of Paul Rudd - I think he's hilarious. Which brings me to the subject of how crude and vulgar a lot of comedies are nowadays. In the past Blazing Saddles was the measure by which all vulgar comedies were compared but nowadays there's some pretty nasty stuff out there that make Blazing Saddles look like The Sound of Music in comparison. All three of the aforementioned are certainly "adults only" films to be sure.

I enjoy foreign films as well, although it sounds like you are more of a connoisseur than me. But if I am watching a foreign film, I definitely want to hear the movie in its original language and definitely not dubbed. For me, subtitles can actually enhance a film, probably because you have to pay attention much more and read along. And it's not as difficult as people might imagine. Thanks for the tip on Elegy, I'll check that one out!

Most of my friends and relatives think I am a film snob but the truth is I am actually more forgiving than they imagine, so long as the film is well made. Like OWG, I enjoy movies that are simply entertainment as well as various other genres, including stupid comedies...if they are well made. And I'll let quite a few flaws pass by if it the movie is redeeming in other ways. I'm funny that way.

Agreed. Film making is a very difficult business.

Few people realize how difficult it is to create a film which is not only close to the directors vision but to those others who have an interest in it - studio heads, writers, producers, actors, the audience, critics. It is very difficult to balance the art and business of cinema. That is why you will see people work together again and again after creating a successful film. I mean even some of the most successful film makers and films have many detractors. A few extra detractors or enemies in the industry here and there can affect the success of a film and end the career of a director, an actor or bankrupt a producer.

Had the chance to watch "Body of Lies" a couple of days ago. I really liked it. I thought R. Crowe was great. L. D. has really come into his own.

If you haven't seen Blood Diamond I highly recommend it. He does a solid job in that as well.

anyone seen Wanted? It came in my Netflix for tonight. It wasn't the movie I wanted (yet). I was upset that I didn't get the movie at the top of my list (I only do one movie at a time). Once I went back in, I realized that movie hasn't been released yet Shocked

I'm assuming Wanted is just your standard popcorn action flick?

At least A. Jolie is easy on the eyes.

Yep, wanted is alright. It's got Angelina and Morgan Freeman so you know it's not too bad. You'll enjoy it well enough.

I saw a movie called Quarantine, last night. DD, if you haven't seen this one, you should. It's right up your alley. 'Nuff said there. I'm not a big fan of horror movies, not because I don't care for them, it's just there are too few good ones out there. This one was well done and worked for me.

I really liked Wanted a lot. Surprised me because I didn't expect to like it but it's a high adrenaline comic book action filck. Lot's of over the top action sequences. I think you'll end up enjoying it.

Just watched this a couple nights ago.

Quarantine is one of those movies that makes you say, "Holy crap." when it's finally over. Seriously it's a heck of a ride. Some sequences were so intense that I was really on on the edge of my seat. You can say that and not really mean it about some movies but this one has some truly heart pounding moments. and Jennifer Carpenter from Dexter fame isn't too tough on the eyes either. She's no Angelina Jolie but there's not many of those in the world.
