There are two movies coming out that I'm very intrigued by.

John Rambo ( First blood is the only good one in the franchise) but check out the unrated trailer for this movie. It looks hardcore. You can probably find it on youtube. Aintitcoolnews.com had it for awhile, but had to take it down. It looks pretty impressive.

The second movie is AVP 2. Yes, the first one was horrible (we own it, son has seen it about 10 times) they tagged it with that #)($^&@#$%+@* PG-13 rating that just ruins movies (ok, writing, acting sucked as well). AVP2 is going back to R (all the individual Alien/Predator movies were are R, so PG-13 didn't make sense) and the unrated trailer looks pretty damn good. Blatant Alien violence!!!!  Again, Youtube might have it.

I just wanted to share these thoughts, I didn't want to post any "R" rated trailers on here, so I will let you search for yourself if your so inclined.

It's funny; I saw the subject line, and my mind immediately went to a musical I watched on HBO for the umpteenth time (The Music Man).  I don't think it's possible to read about such polar opposite movies in one thread.

I have to agree.  This thread would be much better if it were only discussing The Music Man.  Smiley

I watched a couple of movies on my days off.

CovlerField-I liked it. The hand held camera thing didn't bother me at all.

Rambo-It was much better than I had anticipated. I loved the first one, its a classic for me. I watched the second Rambo flick and that caused me to give up on them. This one though, wow.........Pure unalderated violence. If you like action flicks this is a good flick for you.

Both movies were 90 minutes long. I love that in a movie. I hate 2.5 hr movies.

Watched a decent movie last nite that I hadn't heard of..   Criminal, from 2004, with John C. Reilly..

Good con-man flick, with a twist.. and 87 minutes long.. Just for you, DD..

Thanks for the Criminal tip, A5S.  John C. Reilly is a mighty fine actor so I'll keep my eyes open for it.

We watched "The Great Debaters" the other night. It stars Denzel Washington and produced by Oprah.  It was much better than I thought it would be, in large part due to the acting and screenplay.  It was very well written and only a little cliche or over-the-top in a few places.  I'll give it a A-

You guys are probably way ahead of us, I saw that move the bucket list the other day on a plane.

My god how inspiring is that movie.  If you have not seen it, it is worth a look.  Mind you I am a 37 something bloke that weighs over 100Kgs (heavy weight division) and I was crying my eyes out.

Great movie...

I am obviously a totally different generation to you guys but as I would never watch a musical.  im with Detroitdad though, Preditor was cool, alien was silly but fun, and to put them together was just not a very good idea at all...lol.

have fun.

You must not have seen the R-rated version of the Music Man with those trombone massacres and coronet maimings. The G-rated version is sooooo watered down.

Various tidbits:

Since I played Winthrop in our high school production of The Music Man, I've always been a little partial to it.

John C. Reilly is a GREAT actor and I don't know why I've never seen Criminal.  I will look for it.  For those of you who like a good con man movie, have you seen Diggstown with James Woods, Louis Gossett, Jr., and Oliver Platt?  It's pretty good.

I refuse to watch "The Great Debaters" simply because Oprah is involved with it and I can't stand that bleeping phony of a woman.

The Bucket List was a great movie - I enjoyed it a lot.  (SIDENOTE: Real men are allowed to cry at certain movies - I'm not sure this one qualifies, but it's close.  So, benefit of the doubt goes to FSL who better have cried during Field of Dreams.)

I'm also a big fan of the two National Treasure movies.

Another largely unknown movie with great actors is Mystery, Alaska.  Give it a peek - it's a great movie - one of my favorites (and sidenote to FSL, you are also allowed to cry at this movie, but only a little bit).

The only thing I disagree with is the National Treasure Movies. The best thing I can say about them is the first one was tolerable. That's it. Of course I can't friggen stand N. Cage so that could be one reason.

I read a review that I sort of agree with.  While he is a great actor, and pulls the part off well, he's not the best choice for the role, I don't think.  I wonder if he wasn't cast more for his name.  But definitely check it out.  Another one that he's in  - huge cast - is Magnolia.  LOTS of great actors in that one, and I'm still moderately confused by that movie.

I always thought Old Yeller was the gold standard for grown men openly weeping at a movie - it was referenced in Stripes for Pete's sake.  Has it been replaced?

Of course, that doesn't mean I didn't get choked up at Field of Dreams.

Oh, no...Old Yeller is definitely on the list and probably still the Gold Standard.  "Hey, Dad.  Do you wanna have a catch?" still has to rank pretty highly, though.

Of course, "I said it first." at the end of The Cutting Edge has to....oh, nevermind....I think I just lost my man card, though.

Thing with Cage is he tends to do 3 types of movies... really good, really bad, and then the ones where the rest of the cast saves the movie.

I watched Lord of War recently and I was really impressed with it.. probably his best in a long time...

I'll agree he has BIG stinkers...such as Wickerman (which I laughed almost uncontrollably thru) Ghost Rider (some comics are just too cheesy for the screen)..

I really didn't mind stuff like Weather Man, Matchstick Men, Family Man... (he likes Man a lot eh?) but as I said the ensemble casts help those..

As for National Treasure... maybe its a guilty pleasure but I love them... (I've had a flare for cryptology since I was very young) and am stoked NT 3 is due in 2010  Tongue

I liked Weather Man. Mainly because Cage was crapped on the entire movie.

Lord of War was decent. Would have been better if Cage wasn't in it.

I can count Cages half way decent movies on one hand.

Weather Man
Lord of War
Wild at Heart
Fast Times at Ridgemont High

His best movie (prolly only one I would say he did good in) was LEaving Las Vegas. I only watched that one on a friends recommendation.

However no matter how good a movie he has made, or will make. They are all ruined by "Face Off and the Horrible Sci-FI movie that I can't think of"

B

Now, I just got back from one of the worse movies I have ever seen.

(Click to show/hide)

We saw it at the dollar theater, and I feel cheated out of 4 bucks and 90 minutes of my life.

I let the kids pick where we went to lunch and the movies. Last time that will happen (to celebrate the end of school).

I was hesitant at first about this movie, but the more I see and read about it the more I think it might have a chance. The article does mention that it went through 3 directors while being made. That isn't usually a good thing.

With all due lack of respect to the bad Cage movies listed, I don't see how his worst movie could not be Windtalkers.  I watched it for a WWII class a few years ago, and I couldn't believe how awful it was.
Also, I'd have to consider Leaving Las Vegas as one of Cage's good movies.  Now, whether or not Cage is an asset to the film might be another might be another matter, but still...

I was giving him props for Leaving Las Vegas.

I haven't seen most of his movies. The only way I will watch them is if the wife/kids want to see it, i.e. the Treasure Hunter movies or a reliable source recommends one to me. Otherwise I won't give them a chance.

I mean, Face Off............come on, how can you read that script and thing, "wow, great movie".

I will take your word for windtalkers.........never seen it, never will.

I am surprised he wasn't in "The SuperHero Movie" since that was godawful.

Good decision on Windtalkers.  That movie is just a joke.

It seems so wrong that dude can make so many terrible movies and get paid soooo much for them.  I mean, Face/Off was a hit, right?  And that movie's just plain awful.

Damn fine list!!!

A Time to Kill (I think is the name of the movie) with Matthew M. was solid. He however did not carry the movie.

The only thing I liked Brendan F. in was a few episodes of Scrubs. He was actually pretty good.

Don't you have to be highly regarded to be overrated?  I certainly wouldn't put Chris O'Donnell or Brendan Fraser on that list, but they have done some decent movies (although, they certainly didn't carry them).  Chris O'Donnell, by my count, has only done three movies since 2000.

Chris O'Donnell (nothing decent after 1996):
- Scent of a Woman
- The Three Musketeers
- The Chamber

Brenden Fraser:
- With Honors (a very good movie)
- Blast From the Past
- The Mummy

Matthew McConoughy has done some decent movies as well.  I wouldn't call him overrated:

- A Time to Kill
- Contact
- U-571
- We Are Marshall

I personally liked Sahara, but many people may not have.  Also, he's done all the chic flicks that my wfie likes, "The Wedding Planner", How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days", "Failure to Launch"

I think it's safe to say he's carried a few films.

Keanu Reeves....now that's a different story....he did Speed, and then he did Matrix, and then....ummm......ummmmm....... (Actually, The Lake House was decent.)  (OK, I forgot about the Devil's Advocate, but I didn't actually like it.....we do get to see a lot of Charlize Theron in his movies, though....that can't be all bad.)

I gotta defend Keanu here... he's done some great/good movies:

Hardball, The Replacements, Sweet November, Point Break, The Watcher..

Bill &Ted's EA still makes me laugh when I watch it..

As for the Matrix Trilogy, I actually grew to appreciate the entire story more when it got some heavy debate/critique in an old english class of mine back in college though I'l agree that the first one was by far the best.

Keanu may have been in great movies, but he doesn't carry anything.

IMHO, the worst "big name" actor in the biz.

I really liked The Devil's Advocate, but listening to him try to pull off a southern accent killed me.

Keanu may have been in great movies, but he doesn't carry anything.

IMHO, the worst "big name" actor in the biz.

I really liked The Devil's Advocate, but listening to him try to pull off a southern accent killed me.

And he made like $50 Mill off Matrix 2, or Reloaded...

K Reeves has little talent, and why Holllywood thinks he's a star worthy of big bucks, I'll never understand.

I gotta defend Keanu here... he's done some great/good movies:

Hardball stupid, The Replacements stupid, Sweet November will never see it, Point Break WTF, The Watcher.. never seen it

Bill &Ted's EA still makes me laugh when I watch it.. This is the only good one I will give you. surprise, he can play a dumbass

As for the Matrix Trilogy, I actually grew to appreciate the entire story more when it got some heavy debate/critique in an old english class of mine back in college though I'l agree that the first one was by far the best.

The first Matrix is one of my favorite all time movies. I love sci-fi flicks. The second one was tolerable. I disliked the third one as much as I liked the first one.

By the third movie they had turned Morpheus into a little

Yeah, let me rephrase that. Keanu adds ZERO value to any movie that he is in.  You could pick a random guy off the streets and he'd be every bit as passable in any role that Keanu has played.

Keanu did pretty good in Street Kings, Point Break, and The Matrix. the rest of them were mediocre at best

he stunk in Devil's Advocate in comparison to the other great actors/actresses.

He wasn't bad in Speed - you just hand to suspend your sense of reality (as with the last Die Hard movie).  He was also pretty good in The Lake House.  I did not like him in Devil's Advocate.

Also, I don't think a random guy off the street could have played Theodore Logan in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure even though he played essentially the same character in Parenthood.

Now, Ben Afflack and Whoopi Goldberg, there's a couple overrated actors for you!!!!!

Hell yeah, Keanu Reason Number 1, Patrick Reason Number 2, Gary Reason Number 3 (only because I don't think he was cracked out at the time), how could you NOT love this movie? Tongue

Just absolutely hate the first two actors you listed, throw B. Assfleck on a plane and ship them to some isolated island and the movie biz would be much better.

I actually think Affleck is getting a little better, Paycheck was a good movie.  Love his brother though, Casey is going to be big eventually.  Assasination of Jesse James was a brilliant flick.

Just watched Charlie Wilson's War.  Fun movie, and good choice for Hanks.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman makes a good disgruntled Greek.

Affleck needs to stick to directing. Gone Baby Gone was great.

Watched Bucket List last night. It was IMO just ok. The wife liked it much better than I. I was was actually a little bored with it. I mean, I kept waiting for the Zomies to pop out, but none did.

Not my cup of tea, but I guess I can see the potentiol. Freeman/Nicholas live up to their standards.

Fluff, but it produced a classic line from Jack though - advising his assistant that when he gets old there are three rules to remember, "never pass up a bathroom, never waste a hard-on, and never trust a fart". I have a feeling I'll be using that one more and more the older I get.
