flush vs flush

Hia, myself and my usual opponents have for some time held that "a flush is a flush" meaning if two players hold a flush, it will always result in a split pot, as both hands hold a full 5 card hand... now my opinion seems to be shifting, could anyone clarify the ruling on flushes for me please?

can one flush, beat another flush, if so is it the highest card, and if they are equal is it the next highest card, and so on that will decide the highest flush?

lots of differnt people, all with differnt rules from differnt books by differnt people, one must hav not been clear enough on the rulling of this, or didn't word it very well, or someone assumed such and such, and it stuck until now, when I've started to question they way we've done things in the past, as now I know there is a better, correct way.

May I suggest that for the next game you bring a printed copy of Roberts Rules of Poker and maybe som other printouts from the HPT archives. There's A LOT of good stuff there.

Well, this might need an authority higher than Robert's Rules or HPT guidelines to convince them.

How about a book by John Scarne, the World's Foremost Gambling Authority?

"Scarne's Guide to Modern Poker", page 40:

The Flush: any five cards of the same suit but not in sequence. In evaluating two or more flushes, the winner is determined by the rank of the highest card in the hand. If the highest card in contesting hands are of the same rank, then the next highest cards determine the winner. And if these are of the same rank, then the winning hand is determined by the third highest cards. Et cetera! If all the cards of the players are equal, then the hands are tied.
